Police Review Mandelson After Epstein Files Trigger Storm

Police are reviewing allegations of misconduct in public office after explosive new files suggested Lord Peter Mandelson passed sensitive government information to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein while serving as business secretary.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed it is assessing multiple reports following the release of millions of documents by the US Department of Justice. The material appears to include email exchanges from 2009 showing Mandelson forwarding internal government information to Epstein during the financial crisis.

The SNP and Reform UK have formally referred the peer to police, with the Liberal Democrats, Plaid Cymru and several Labour MPs also calling for a full investigation. Mandelson has not responded to requests for comment.

Downing Street said Sir Keir Starmer believes Mandelson should no longer sit in the House of Lords or use his title, though ministers admit there is currently no legal mechanism to strip a peerage without new legislation. The government has now launched an urgent internal investigation into Mandelson’s dealings with Epstein while in office.

Among the allegations contained in the released emails are claims that Mandelson shared advance notice of a €500bn EU bailout, discussed a one-off tax on bankers’ bonuses, and suggested JP Morgan boss Jamie Dimon should “mildly threaten” the chancellor. The files also refer to historic payments allegedly made by Epstein to Mandelson and to his partner — claims Mandelson has denied.

Former prime minister Gordon Brown has ordered a “wider and more extensive enquiry” into whether confidential or market-sensitive information was improperly disclosed. Senior ministers described the alleged conduct as “wholly unconscionable,” particularly given Epstein’s criminal convictions.

Mandelson has already resigned his Labour membership and remains on leave from the Lords. He was removed from his US ambassador role last year as further details of his Epstein links emerged.

The case has reignited calls to reform Lords disciplinary rules, with senior Labour figures warning the scandal risks deepening public cynicism about politics.

Key Takeaways:

  • Police are assessing claims Mandelson passed confidential information to Epstein.

  • Emails suggest sharing of sensitive economic plans during the financial crisis.

  • Pressure is mounting to strip disgraced peers of titles as political fallout grows.
