Trump Threatens Tariffs for Countries Trading With Iran

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order opening the door to sweeping new tariffs on countries that continue doing business with Iran, dramatically raising the economic stakes as nuclear talks resume.

The order, signed Friday, authorises tariffs on goods imported into the United States from any country that “directly or indirectly purchases, imports, or otherwise acquires any goods or services from Iran.” While it does not set a fixed rate, the order repeatedly references 25% as a potential benchmark.

Trump has not formally announced the move in a public statement, but reinforced his hard line while speaking aboard Air Force One, repeating that Iran must be denied nuclear weapons “under any circumstances.”

The White House said the order reaffirms an “ongoing national emergency” with respect to Iran and allows the president to modify or escalate measures as circumstances change. It cited Tehran’s nuclear ambitions, support for terrorism, ballistic missile development and regional destabilisation.

The move comes as US and Iranian officials held rare talks in Oman — the first since last June’s US strikes on Iran’s three main nuclear facilities. Iran’s delegation was led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, while the US side included special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Trump described the talks as “very good,” claiming Iran “wants to make a deal very badly,” while warning that failure would bring “very steep consequences.” Another meeting is expected early next week.

Oman’s foreign minister said the discussions helped clarify positions and identify possible areas of progress. Araghchi called the talks “a good start,” citing a positive atmosphere, but stressed that consultations were continuing in both capitals.

The tariff threat revives language Trump first used in January, when he warned that any country trading with Iran would face a blanket 25% tariff on US trade — a warning that alarmed allies and trading partners but lacked legal backing at the time.

Iran has yet to comment on the latest order and continues to insist its nuclear programme is peaceful, despite mounting US military deployments in the region and escalating rhetoric from Washington.

Key Takeaways

  • Trump has legally armed himself to hit Iran’s trading partners with tariffs of up to 25%

  • The move coincides with rare US–Iran nuclear talks in Oman

  • Allies and rivals alike now face a choice: trade with Iran, or risk US punishment
