A 22 year old Afghan Migrant Who Left Woman Bloodied In Random Street Attack Dies In Jail

An Afghan migrant who carried out a vicious, unprovoked street attack on a lone woman — leaving her dripping with blood — has died in prison.

Gulwali Stanekzay, who was 22 at the time of the assault, died at HMP Wandsworth on January 17 aged 25. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has launched an investigation into his death.

Stanekzay was jailed after repeatedly punching 23-year-old Aisha Waris in a terrifying random attack as she walked home alone in Harlesden, north-west London, in February 2023.

CCTV footage showed Stanekzay deliberately riding his bike into Ms Waris before launching a sustained assault, repeatedly punching her head and shoulders for around a minute. Bloodied and dazed, she tried to continue home — only for him to return moments later and attack her again.

As she fled towards a neighbour’s house begging him to stop, Stanekzay ignored her pleas and carried out a third savage assault on the doorstep, forcing her to seek shelter inside.

Ring doorbell footage captured Ms Waris whimpering in fear as Stanekzay pursued her onto the property. He then attempted to force his way inside, delivering flying kicks to the front door before smashing glass and the camera with a bike lock.

Stanekzay also caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to a parked car and attacked Ms Waris’s father when he arrived at the scene, punching him repeatedly and dragging him along the road.

Ms Waris suffered facial injuries, bruising across her body and lasting psychological trauma. Her father was left with a broken tooth and black eye.

Stanekzay, who arrived in Britain as an unaccompanied minor from Afghanistan in 2016, was homeless at the time of the attack and had a history of violence. He was already in breach of a suspended sentence for assault.

Sentencing him, the judge described the attack as “wholly unprovoked” and “upsetting and frightening.”

Stanekzay was jailed for a total of three years. He never publicly explained his actions.
