GOP Rebels Defy Trump Over Canada Tariffs Showdown

Six House Republicans broke ranks with Donald Trump on Wednesday, voting with Democrats to block his Canada tariffs in a rare and pointed act of defiance against the president’s trade agenda.

The move marks one of the most significant public splits within the GOP since Trump began his second term, where tariffs have become a defining economic weapon. Despite intense pressure from party leadership and the White House, Reps. Thomas Massie, Don Bacon, Kevin Kiley, Jeff Hurd, Brian Fitzpatrick and Dan Newhouse sided with Democrats in a vote aimed at effectively repealing the Canada tariffs.

Trump responded swiftly and bluntly on Truth Social, warning that any Republican who votes against his tariff regime would “seriously suffer the consequences come Election time,” including primary challenges.

Speaker Mike Johnson attempted to calm the storm, insisting Trump was “not upset” and noting that the president retains veto power. The House vote does not have the two-thirds majority needed to override a veto.

Still, the rebellion underscores growing unease within GOP ranks over the economic fallout. Hurd cited harm to farmers and steel manufacturers in his district. Newhouse pointed to rising costs for fertilizer and agricultural inputs in trade-dependent Washington State. Bacon framed the vote as a constitutional stand, arguing Congress — not the White House — should control tariff authority.

The Senate has already passed a similar measure, which only requires a simple majority. Democrats are now using procedural tools to force additional votes on tariffs targeting Mexico and Trump’s broader “liberation day” trade measures.

While the immediate policy may not change, the message was unmistakable: even in a tightly controlled party, there are limits.

Key Takeaways

  • Six Republicans break ranks: A rare GOP rebellion against Trump’s signature tariff policy.

  • Trump threatens consequences: The president warns of primary challenges for dissenters.

  • Policy likely unchanged: Trump can veto the measure, and Congress lacks numbers to override.
