EU Loses Patience After Trump Revives Tariffs to 15%

The European Union is demanding urgent clarification from Washington after Donald Trump announced plans to impose a new 15 percent global tariff — just one day after the Supreme Court of the United States struck down his previous global tariff regime.

In a sharply worded statement, the European Commission said it had requested “full clarity” on how the U.S. intends to proceed following the court’s ruling on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), the legal foundation previously used to justify sweeping tariffs.

The Commission warned that the “current situation is not conducive” to fair and balanced transatlantic trade, signaling mounting frustration in Brussels.

The shock move has cast doubt over the so-called Turnberry Agreement — a transatlantic trade understanding struck last summer at Trump’s Scottish golf resort. Bernd Lange, chair of the European Parliament’s trade committee, called Trump’s latest tariff threat “a clear breach of the deal” and said he would propose suspending ratification of the agreement.

Lange said renegotiation could not be ruled out, describing the situation as “pure tariff chaos.”

Trump is now invoking Section 122 of the 1974 U.S. Trade Act, allowing tariffs of up to 15 percent for 150 days to address trade imbalances — a different legal pathway than the one struck down by the court.

An analysis by Global Trade Alert suggests the temporary tariff regime could raise the EU’s effective tariff burden to roughly 12.5 percent — an increase of about 0.8 percentage points — while easing pressure on countries such as Brazil, China and India.

An extraordinary meeting of EU lawmakers is set for Monday, with a European Parliament vote on implementing the EU’s side of the trade deal scheduled for Tuesday. That vote may now be postponed pending legal review and firmer U.S. commitments.

The transatlantic trade truce is once again hanging by a thread.

Key Takeaways – EU Demands Clarity After Trump’s Tariff Threat

  1. EU Seeks Answers: The European Commission has demanded “full clarity” from Washington after Trump announced a new 15% global tariff, following the Supreme Court striking down his previous tariff regime.

  2. Trade Deal in Doubt: The Turnberry Agreement, designed to ease tariffs on industrial goods and lobster, may face a pause or renegotiation, with European Parliament votes potentially delayed pending legal assessment.

  3. Tariff Impact: The temporary 15% tariff could raise the EU’s effective rate to 12.5%, while providing relief to Brazil, China, and India. Brussels warns the uncertainty threatens fair, balanced transatlantic trade.
