Trump sparks controversy with Pearl Harbor remark during Japan meeting

Featured Replies

US President Donald Trump has drawn criticism after making a remark referencing the Attack on Pearl Harbor during a White House meeting with Japan’s prime minister. The comment came as Mr Trump hosted Sanae Takaichi in the Oval Office on Thursday, where discussions focused in part on the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

During a question-and-answer session, a Japanese journalist asked why the United States had not informed allies, including Japan, ahead of military action against Iran.

In response, Mr Trump said that maintaining an element of surprise was important in military operations.

Exchange during Iran war discussion

“One thing you don’t want to do is signal too much,” he said, before adding: “Who knows better about surprise than Japan?”

He then followed up with another remark, asking: “Why didn’t you tell me about Pearl Harbor?”

The comments prompted initial laughter in the room, though the mood reportedly shifted after the reference to the 1941 attack.

Historical reference raises unease

The Japanese strike on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on 7 December 1941 killed more than 2,000 Americans and led to the United States entering the Second World War. Then-president Franklin D. Roosevelt described it as “a date which will live in infamy.”

The war between the two nations ended in 1945 following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Observers noted that Ms Takaichi appeared uncomfortable following the exchange, as the topic touched on a sensitive chapter in US-Japan relations.

Mixed reactions to remarks

Supporters of the president praised the comment as a sharp response to the question. Eric Trump described it on social media as one of the most notable exchanges with a reporter.

Others were more critical. Journalist Mehdi Hasan said the remark was striking but expressed concern about its tone given the historical context.

The exchange was not the first time Mr Trump has faced criticism over references to historical conflicts. In a previous meeting with Germany’s chancellor Friedrich Merz, he described the D-Day landings as “not a pleasant day,” prompting a correction that the event marked the liberation of Germany from Nazi rule.

Broader tensions over Iran conflict

The meeting also highlighted ongoing tensions between the United States and its allies over the conflict involving Iran. Mr Trump has repeatedly criticised partner countries for their reluctance to provide military support, particularly in securing the Strait of Hormuz.

Japan faces domestic constraints in deploying its Self-Defense Forces abroad, due to its post-war constitution, which limits military engagement.

Following the meeting, Ms Takaichi said both sides agreed on the importance of safeguarding key shipping routes, while outlining the legal limitations on Japan’s military role.

Despite the awkward moment, officials suggested the overall tone of the meeting remained constructive, with both leaders seeking to maintain close diplomatic ties.

According to Gen Kelly, when Trump and Kelly were on the launch at Pearl Harbor, on the way to view the Arizona Memorial, Kelly claims Trump asked, "So what's this boat all about?"

It seems to me he did again not really know what happened and is confused.

When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor it was an enemy they attacked!

Why warn an enemy about an attack? Did trump warn Iran?

No! Iran was still engaged in talks and did not expect an attack at all!

What ms.Takaichi meant is "Why did you not inform your allies?"

She was very nice about it,i would have asked him how he could play golf with bone spurs.

Lieutenant Kermit Tyler ignored a report that a large amount of airplanes where flying towards Pearl

Harbor,so it was a costly fault by the US army at that time.

More to come i am sure.

Easy answer ... they can't be trusted 🙄

Yet another example of his dementia.

Worth recalling Roosevelt's famous words at the time. The attack wasn't merely without warning, but was carried out in the midst of talks between the two nations, with Japan being accused of perfidy.

Japan and the US were NOT military enemies prior to Pearl Harbour!

At worst they could be accused of being verbal and economic enemies!

AI sums their relationship prior to the attack as" Overall, while there were significant tensions, the relationship was not explicitly defined as an enemy state prior to the attack."

Yes i know that,it was this attack that started the US to be involved in the second world war.

It was a surprise attack much the same way trump did with Iran.

Two wrongs don't make a right.

In reply to jingthing I’m not so sure, perhaps it was raw meat for his base…..as to Mr Jvs weren’t we negotiating with Iran at the time of the sneak attack? If so that kinda puts it on the same level as Pearl Harbor ether way it was a vulgar stupid thing to say to someone you are seeking assistance from.just plain stupid in my view.

Nonsense when you do something in your country’s name you build consensus beforehand and if you are smart you build alliances beforehand ESPECIALLY if affects others.it also helps to do it within the laws of your country.

You're sane washing.

This was priceless, the perfect answer to an awkward question.

Even the Japanese PM thought it was awkward, see her eyes looking at the guy who asked it, if looks could kill, he wont be on anymore outings that's for sure!😄

Watched it last night, and I thought it was spot on.

The man knows no shame. White American's think it's funny. Wait for the backlash when PM Takaichi returns to Japan's parliament, the National Diet of Japan.

Takaichi the Japanese PM can understand and speak English quite fluently, In fact, her English proficiency is a major part of why that Pearl Harbor exchange was so "electric."

Because she didn't need the 10-second delay for an interpreter to catch up, she was able to react to his "Pearl Harbor" comment in real-time. That's why her facial expression—the wide eyes and the "icy" stare at the journalist who asked the question!

What was so good was Trump processed the reporter's "Japan/Allies" prompt and instantly connected it to the most famous "surprise" in military history. To do that in the high-pressure environment of the Oval Office—with cameras rolling and the Japanese PM inches away—is a level of mental agility that his opponents often underestimate.....EPIC..!!

trump equals Incompetence and ignorance personified. He is what he has aways been, is and will continue to be.

Anyone saying it was genius clearly has a preference for bluster over competence.

Can’t think of a less appropriate country leader to make the remake to. Japanese culture is all about respect, bringing up Pearl Harbour attacks lacks understanding and respect of their culture.

REDUX from Soapbox:

It seems from reports from other sources about the meeting of President Trump and the Japanese PM is that she learned how to best deal with Trump on camera by watching some of his gushing 'incredible' * cabinet meetings.

* NB 14 'Incredibles' from the 30 APR 2025 cabinet meeting

So maybe Trump will now stop begging his allies-in-name-only to get him out of the mess he got himself in. No one wants to help him.

If the comment was truly a "cultural failure," Takaichi wouldn't have walked away with a $40 billion nuclear reactor deal and a joint agreement on oil stockpiling. In Trump's world, "ribbing" an ally is a sign of inclusion in the "inner circle," not an insult.

That's not all Trump was mad about

What did not get reported was Trump saying, "Remember Hiroshima? We can do it again."

What else can you expect from him? Seriously. The man's a global bogan. And that's the nicest thing about him.

He didn't 'rib'. He avoided a pertinent question by an affected party with a dumb non sequitur which made no sense.

Yea I know ... politicians, who can you trust. At least Trump tries to do what he says:

... tax break

... close the border

... deport illegal aliens

... "bomb the sh!t out of them"

The reporter’s question was a trap designed to make Trump look like an unreliable ally for not giving Japan a "heads-up" on the Iran strikes.

If he had answered the question "properly" (by talking about intelligence sharing), the reporter would have followed up with five more questions about why he doesn't trust his allies.

By asking, "Why didn't you tell me about Pearl Harbor?" Trump instantly reminded the room that Japan’s own military history is built on the necessity of surprise.

He essentially said: "You of all people should know that you don't call your friends before a secret mission." It wasn't a non sequitur; it was a case study in operational security delivered as a jab, which made perfect sense!

Obviously over your head,dude.

If being a 'troll' is what it takes to turn a trap question into a $40 billion nuclear deal and a Japanese commitment to help open the Strait, then maybe the 'presidential' types should start taking notes.coffee1
