The RED Cap: Do you recall the days when you loved seeing them?

Featured Replies

Dear Folks,

Before the Era of Trump, and his Red Caps, there were Red Caps.

Do you recall those days?

I can recall going to the train station, seeking Red Caps, and being thankful when I was lucky enough to find one.

Do you recall those days?

image.png

These days, though, Trump has given Red Caps a bad name.

Will Trump be able to atone for his sin against all good Red Caps?

And, do you recall those glorious days?

One can never go home, again.

Such a tragedy.

Best regards,

Gamma

Such beauty in flight....

During those days, that now long-lost period of air ravel, and rail travel, nobody ever kicked a stewardess in the teeth.

Kicking a stewardess in the teeth would have been UNTHINKABLE.

But, these days: It's OK.

Ah yes, the Ol' Red Tail ... that occupied my life for 13+ yrs. Red Tail, since when first started, as NW regional carrier, in the event of an oops, would be easy to spot in the snow. Also why no painted fuselage, so it glistens in the sun. Along with less weight, and can carry more cargo.

Actually preferred Continental Airlines, before bankruptcy, pre 1980, when I worked for them. Their FC was award winning for service & food quality. Fine dining for free, and loved flying them around.

When I worked for them at PHL (1979), I was in charge of testing and approving meals served. Since small station (3 flights), and I settled on United's flight kitchen offerings.

If our flight had an oops, and we had to put people on UN, or them on CO, it was funny as the passengers would either complain or be happy ... "good, don't have to eat that crappy chicken", but were served the same on either.

Why the FROWN?

I still vividly recall riding on Northwest from Taipei to California, many times, in the early 1980s.

I had no complaints.

No need to frown, Golden brown.

Texture like sun.

Every time, just like the last.

Never a frown, with Northwest.

Northwest was not too bad, but, I think China Airlines was more comfortable, during that period of time.

What color tie do you choose each morning?

RED or BLUE or Golden Brown?

I hear that Newsom's California will be bringing back the Red Caps for their high speed rail. Probably promising $50 an hour minimum wage, with DEI hiring.

Oh, who am I kidding? Pigs will fly before Cali has high speed rail...

Yea, I know, but only thing, surprisingly, that I could find.

CO's FC was really good. They'd set you up with real China, real cutlery, wheel the food over to you, Chateaubriand, and start slicing till you stopped them, then choose your veggies & warm rolls.

Less than 9 yrs later, and I'm with NWA, and it's looks like a really nice microwave meal you'd buy at the market. Usually just OK, and everything served with plastic. Still way better than the back of the bus, but nothing like CO.

Can only imagine how bad DL & CO are now. Flew UA once, 2003 and that was pretty poor service, economy. TG, non stop BKK - JFK (2006) was excellent, in comparison to UA.

Did you ever fly on ward air ? My dad told me many times how fantastic it was back in the day.

That is a bit like saying here is a photo of Concorde because I could not find a photo of The Red Baron.

Never had the pleasure. Most of flights were on Allegheny Airlines (US Air/AA), since worked for a commuter that code shared with them. CO & NWA and KLM in Europe, since NWA code shared with them.

We got 50-75% off, in not just a minimal charge, even free for other airlines. Used Chalks' seaplanes for the Bahamas. Xmas parties and they use to give out free passes like crazy, on other airlines, and I don't think there was a year myself or girlfriend didn't get one.

Go 50% off chain hotels, if not less. Although back then I had a timeshare, which you could trade (RCI group), or folks would rent for their fee, just so they didn't have to pay it.

If not for the airlines, my travels would have been limited to driving & camping. Main reason I worked for them. to see a bit more than the East coast as adult. Parents went across the country, top & bottom, but I was younger than 11, so can't say I appreciated it back then.

How the hell I ended up here is a trip. Still amazes me when I think about. Far from the world traveler, and mostly stuck to N. America. Did abuse the hell out of those flight bennies though.

I guess they used to have China plates and real cutlery. Even though plastics were available. The food and service was top notch.

They could afford to do that before deregulation, when they didn't have to compete on price. In fact, they couldn't compete on price, so service was the differentiator. Now, we have cattle cars and cheap tickets.

I also recall rocking up to a United gate with a Delta ticket and they'd honor it if there was a seat available. (Forgive me if I have the airlines confused. It may have been a Continental ticket at a TWA gate) Because they all charged the same fares, I guessed that they swapped tickets with each other after the fact.

As much as I lament the nature of the experience nowadays, cheap airfare is appealing.

In UK and Europe in autumn and spring you can find Red Cap mushrooms , some are psychadelic and some are lethal , Also British army has Red Caps they are the Military Police.

You actually got a decent meal on those flights. I loved flying in those prop-jobs back when I was a kid.

I flew on Allegheny Airlines (US Air/AA) back in the day between Massachusetts and Pennsylvanian to visit my grandparents. Remember it well.
