Vietnam's Maritime Administration urges cooperation with Iran to ensure safe passage of Vietnamese vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. Nineteen vessels owned by Vietnamese enterprises operate in the Middle East, with four flying the Vietnamese flag. The Vietnam Maritime and Inland Waterways Administration (VIMAWA) emphasized the need for coordinated efforts to protect maritime operations amid increasing regional security concerns.

VIMAWA proposed prioritizing Vietnamese-flagged ships for safe transit and sought assurances for vessels registered under foreign flags but owned by Vietnamese companies. They urged Iran to support ships carrying crude oil and petroleum products to Vietnam, crucial for maintaining the country’s energy supply. The agency also recommended that Iran issue an official notice to facilitate insurance for vessels traversing the strategic waterway.

In a meeting with the Ministry of Construction and others, VIMAWA discussed engaging with Iran to ensure operational safety for Vietnamese-owned vessels and seafarers in the Gulf region. Emphasizing enhanced diplomatic efforts, they called for Vietnamese missions in the Middle East to provide updates and support for vessels in emergencies.
