Do you remember when the mainland cable broke?

How many days was it,

Planned power cut yesterday here in Maenam from 8:30 am reminded me clearly, as power only came back after 9pm; so, supper was in the cosy light of candles...

I was however prepared, as when I drove back from shopping at 4:30 pm there were still no cables in the high-power lines, unlikely that they would manage to put up new stronger wires in 30 minutes and reconnect all transformers along the beach side of the main road, to restore power as promised by 5pm...

The major main-cable blackout back was early in December 2012 and the blackout lasted about four days. Flash lights and batteries were quickly sold out everywhere. They had mobile generators giving us one hour of electricity every 18th hour. There were written notes in 7-Eleven shops when the different local areas would get some electricity, as 300kW generators were moved around and connected directly to the distribution lines from a 220 volt transformer...

They had actually already ordered a new heavy underwater cable from Norway – that kind of stuff is not a stock item, it's made on order to fit the exactly spot, where it shall be installed – but luckily manage to fix the old cable, as it broke quite close to Samui. It took a about a month for the huge calble-ship to lay down the new cable from mainland to Maenam Bay, but via Thongsala on Koh Phangan, so that island also got a better electric supply. The chose the northen part of Samui for the new cable, two two old smalles supply-lines land at south in the Taling Ngam-area. My photo is from when the cable arrived on the beach here in February 2013...
