Pathum Thani Police Officers Removed Over Gold Necklace Extortion

Eight police officers in Pathum Thani have been removed following allegations they extorted a valuable gold necklace from a local couple. Yuwadee, 29, who runs a snooker club, reported that the incident occurred at her home on March 25. Officers allegedly demanded 200,000 baht, ultimately taking a gold necklace valued at nearly 150,000 baht.

The officers reportedly arrived without permission, claiming to be on duty, and searched Yuwadee's house. Failing to find illegal items, they focused on a notebook listing debts owed to her. The officers accused her of illegal money lending, seizing the couple's bank accounts, which held minimal funds.

Threatened with prosecution, Yuwadee was pressured into paying 100,000 baht within ten minutes. Concerned for her children, she gave them her gold necklace. Later, the officers returned 10,000 baht, apologizing due to her family situation. Feeling that proper legal channels weren't followed, Yuwadee filed a complaint backed by CCTV evidence.

Responding to her complaint, the local non-profit Saimai Survive supported her cause, leading to an investigation where the eight officers denied wrongdoing. However, they were removed from duty pending further inquiry. Pathum Thani Police Commander Peeraphon Chotikasathian mentioned that a civilian's involvement is also under scrutiny and warned of severe penalties, including the death penalty, if extortion charges are proven.

Big Joke's knowledge comes from first hand experience!

8 officers removed from duty. It remains to be seen what happens next. The normal outcome will be that they will be quietly re-instated when things have quietened down.

Removed from duty, on pay awaiting a new transfer posting.😀

Death penalty seems a bit much!

I agree in principal.. but.. I think when we are talking about extortion under the color of authority - that raises the bar from what would other wise be a serious offense, extortion, but perhaps not one that makes the accused eligible for death.. So, I think it IS fair to have the punishment be “enhanced” to reflect that it was done while abusing the power of the state or law.

Here I agree. I’ve long advocated for a publicly accessible database of all public officials who have been found either guilt of a crime while performing their official duties OR found guilty of an administrative office while performing official duties.

So it was all caught on CCTV. How stupid/cocky were these guys, not to check for cameras first, before trying to shake that woman down? Probably done this kind of thing so many times before that they thought they could get away with anything..

A nice long stint in jail is what they deserve, instead of the usual transfer to an inactive post.

He is right. I know because of a very good Russian friend who owned a profitable bar in Pattaya near Walking St, in 2013 and who is now deceased, If he wanted something fixed he used the Thai Mafia, or should I have said RTP?

Sounds sketchy from both sides. Woman was an illegal loan shark. Want police hands off? Brown envelope...or gold necklace.

Indeed- and perhaps a few brown envelopes passing around may help resolve matters promptly?
