Old Vitamins

Featured Replies

Five or six years ago, I went on a vitamin kick: Multi-vitamins, Magnesium, B-12, Niacinamide and a bunch more. Covid came, the vitamin kick ended, I didn't feel it was doing much.

I had purchased in quantity and still have a number of sealed bottles, all at least 4 years past the imprinted expiration date. In many instances, just because something expires, doesn't mean it's degraded. As these are basically supplements and not pharmaceuticals, I wonder if they are safe to use. I hate to bin them all if they are still useful.

Throw them away. Even unopened, 4 years past expiration is too much for me in Thailand. Being unopened helps, but heat and humidity can still affect potency, strength, and overall quality over time, so I would not trust them. If it was just one year past expiration and stored in a stable environment, then yes, maybe.

I bought two wine coolers for storing supplements and other sensitive things. A good solution for people who do not run air conditioning 24/7.

It did occur to me after I wrote my post that mold or fungus could easily form on the tablet surface. To the bin they go.

I hope I don't start seeing super-energetic rats flexing around the bins.

Good idea to keep them in the fridge, even if using them straight away.

Why do you think the manufacturer printed an expiring date on it???😶

The ingredients can decompose and become harmful to health

forget all the nonsense you are reading here. They are still probably good. Use them.

Bad advice, as you want to keep in cool, dark, dry area. Fridge will probably lead to some condensation of moisture that gets in every time you open them, and place back in fridge.

They are okay to use , especially if sealed, but will lose potency. If no air got in, they should be fine, but check them for a rancid smell or discoloration, which could be mold. Healthline is always a good source for info.....https://www.healthline.com/health/food-nutrition/do-vitamins-expire

Hard tablets won't help you much at all. They don't get absorbed well. Just bin them. Best to buy poweders.

This is a sensible approach. There may be reduced potency after expiry. Up to you to discard any opened bottles. If they look good and smell good, they will do you no harm and mat still do you some good!.

I've been a supplements guy all my life. iHerb is so convenient, I don't buy until I'm down to the last handful. I'm not looking for a long life just a healthy one.
