Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet has called on Thailand to move forward with implementing a bilateral agreement on border demarcation, stressing the need for progress to ensure long-term stability along the shared frontier.

In a statement issued on Saturday, he urged both sides to resume survey and demarcation work through existing mechanisms, particularly the Joint Boundary Commission.

Call for implementation of joint statement

Hun Manet said Cambodia expects Thailand to fully adhere to the terms of the joint statement agreed between the two countries.

He highlighted a key provision which affirms that all arrangements are made without affecting the recognised international boundary, while committing both sides to restart demarcation work as soon as possible.

The agreement also prioritises areas where civilians live and includes provisions to ensure the safety of survey teams, including protection from landmines.

Focus on stability along the border

The Cambodian leader said clear and peaceful border demarcation is essential for maintaining long-term peace between the two countries.

He added that progress on the issue would allow communities living along the border to coexist in greater stability.

Cambodia, he said, is ready to proceed with the agreed process and hopes discussions can resume promptly.

Long-standing border tensions

Cambodia and Thailand share an approximately 800-kilometre border, parts of which remain disputed due to historical disagreements dating back to colonial-era mapping.

Tensions along the frontier have periodically escalated, leading to armed clashes, casualties and the displacement of civilians on both sides.

Efforts to resolve these disputes have continued through bilateral mechanisms, though progress has often been slow.
