Vietnam has taken the top two positions in Travel + Leisure's "hidden gem cities" rankings. Released on April 1, the list evaluated 23 cities worldwide based on travel costs, weather, and numbers of activities and restaurants. Hoi An claimed the first spot with a score of 92.96, followed by Da Nang.

The magazine highlighted Hoi An as a "living heritage," captivating visitors with its lantern-lit alleyways and blend of east-west architecture. Noted for its compact arrangement, most attractions, cafes, and craft shops are easily accessible, enhancing the visitor experience. Traditional foods such as banh mi, cao lau, and white rose dumplings contribute to its charm.

Taylor McIntyre, editor of Travel + Leisure, emphasized Hoi An’s appeal, describing it as feeling "like a window into the past" with its colorful homes and temples. The city's proximity to Da Nang offers easy travel options for tourists wanting to explore more of the area.

Other cities on the list include Bruges, Essaouira, Chefchaouen, Calabria, Paros, Cambridge, Belgrade, and Cascais. Travel + Leisure, an American magazine, is well-regarded for its influential travel rankings and insights.

Thailand are you starting to see the big picture yet ?

I’m currently in Hoi An, avoiding Songkran and bad air quality.

A bit silly to call those places "hidden", they've been popular for years. Gems they are though.

Hoi An is an awful tourist poop hole.

Da Nang is a nice beach resort.

I would say they are both commercial poop holes.

I like An Bang just outside Hoi An, it’s mostly older people who probably came here when it was a backpacker location 40 years ago.

Yeah, wouldn't call them hidden. Same as Cambridge (both MA & UK), and definitely Bruges. Belgrade and Cascais a bit more so perhaps, but both worth visiting. I've been to all of these places, the others I have not mentioned I have not.

Been to both Hoi An & Da Nang. Hoi An is too busy for my liking, but no real complaint as that was not a surprise. Restaurants I ate at were universally top drawer. People were decent. A very walkable place, except for the crowds.

Da Nang is more spread out, but taxis and ride hailing apps abound. I really like Da Nang. I've been through An Bang, but not stopped there. Thanks for the tip @JBChiangRai.

You’re welcome, I love Cascais too.

Both Hoi An and Danang are now overrun with laptop bro's.

Glad I saw both at their peak 15 years ago.

Danang still gets the edge due to its scenery and incredible beach.
