Ho Chi Minh City has given the green light for a $4.9 billion Can Gio International Transshipment Port project. This initiative aims to transform Vietnam into a regional container hub. The port will be constructed by a consortium, with the world's largest container carrier, MSC, holding 49% stake through its terminal arm, Terminal Investment Limited Holding S.A.

The city's approval follows the Prime Minister's investment policy signed on January 16, 2025, and includes special mechanisms granted by the National Assembly. The consortium, which also involves Vietnam Maritime Corporation (VIMC) and Saigon Port JSC, will finance 15% of the total investment, with the balance sourced externally.

The groundbreaking is slated for April 30 in the Nha Rong-Khanh Hoi port area, aligning with Vietnam's reunification anniversary. The Can Gio port, spanning 571 hectares, will feature a 7.5 km main quay. Its capacity is planned at 4.8 million TEU by 2030, increasing to 16.9 million TEU by 2047.

In its first phase, two to four berths will accommodate the largest container ships, with potential expansion to 13 berths. The investors are prohibited from transferring the project within 10 years post-land handover and are required to invest VND50 trillion ($1.9 billion) in the first decade.

Aiming for full capacity, Can Gio port could generate between VND34-40 trillion ($1.29-1.52 billion) annually and create thousands of jobs. It's expected to reinforce Vietnam's role in the global logistics framework. The port is part of broader developments, including infrastructure projects to integrate the hub into the city's transport network.
