Trump again threatens to fire Powell

Featured Replies

In fact, I hope his nominated chair get confirmed before 14 May, because Bessent, and some FED governors, have already said FED should not cut rates now.Anyway, although Warsh may be Trump's puppy, it is not him who decide what happens to the rates, he only announces the result of the governors votes.

Can you imagine the insults Trump will throw at him if this happens?

President Trump is threatening to fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell if he does not step aside when his term leading the central bank expires next month.

“I’ll have to fire him, OK?” Trump said in an interview on Wednesday morning with Fox Business.

Republican Sen. Thom Tillis, who sits on the banking committee, has vowed to block Warsh’s confirmation unless a criminal investigation into Powell by the Justice Department is dropped. Without Tillis’s support, Warsh’s nomination can’t move forward because without him, there are not enough votes on the committee.

Bessent suggests Fed should hold off on rate cuts for now amid war uncertainty

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Tuesday signaled he had no objection to the Federal Reserve keeping interest rates on hold for now as officials monitor the fallout from the Iran war, but added that borrowing costs should eventually come down.

“The impetus here is they will need to cut rates,” Bessent told reporters during a roundtable after making remarks at the Institute of International Finance. He said he was “highly confident” that price pressures beyond more volatile food and energy costs would continue to ease.

But, he said of the Fed, “if they want to wait for some clarity, I understand that.”
