Songkran Road Toll Climbs as Return Travel Raises Fresh Safety Concerns

Thailand recorded 191 road deaths and 911 injuries from 951 accidents during the first five days of the Songkran road safety campaign, covering April 10 to 14. Bangkok had the highest cumulative death toll at 16, while Phrae logged the most accidents and injuries over the same period. Officials said speeding and drink-driving remained the main causes of crashes, with motorcycles involved in the largest share of incidents. With April 15 marking the final public holiday, authorities warned that the rush back to Bangkok and other major provinces could keep roads dangerously busy. Provincial agencies were told to tighten traffic control, inspect drivers and vehicles more carefully, and ensure transport services were sufficient across road, rail and air networks.
