Soil Fever: Has soil fever got you a bit worried, these days?

Dear Folks,

I am no hypochondriac, but I must admit that I have been a bit worried about the ongoing MELIOIDOSIS situation which has also seemed concerning to the authorities around here, and nationwide.

There are just so many things that are able to “get us” these days.

Before coming to Thailand, I had never even heard about Soil Fever.

Now, of course, I am glad I have heard about it, since this knowledge might enable me to take precautions, when I think it might be necessary.

For one thing, I will not go outside my house and intentionally roll around in the mud.

And, for another thing, I am glad I did not attend the water-fighting mayhem, recently, which might be one of the risk factors for being exposed to Night-Soil-Fever.

The older I become, the more I realize that health is a precious gift which can be lost in a flash, so unexpectedly.

Therefore, let us please stay on our toes.

Concerning the Thailand Meliodosis Situation, ongoing, here is a good article...

Note:  I will not scare anyone here by posting some of the dermatological images online of Soil Fever. No point in that….

Note2: Another interesting blurb......from the second article already linked.....

I just hope that Sammy is not soaking in Night-Soil.

Night-Soil Madness is even worse.

Who knows how many cases of either sickness is prevalent today.

=========================

As for Melioidosis ....

The treatment is extremely difficult in that weeks/months of antibiotic treatment is required.

Sounds quite nasty indeed.

Good to bring this to attention again.

I think last year there was a similar article about it and

yes , I get more cautious when gardening ,wearing gloves.

But it wears off after a while and my hands often have

wounds.

Just the thought of staying multiple days in a Thai hospital

on a antibiotic drip, should scare the sh-t out of us.

So back to the gloves and mouth masks.

But then cats come in after they have been rolling in the sand ...

I'm sure that those members who masked up (and still mask up), and dutifully got all of their Covid shots and boosters will be screaming at health authorities to manufacture a "soil flu" vaccines to make them all feel "safe." In the meanwhile break out the nitrile gloves, N95 masks, iodine-providine soap, and alcohol gel to kill all those nasty microbes which are trying to kill them. <laughs>

Mysophobia is more likely to make a phobic person sick than microbes as those people do the exact opposite of challenging their immune system. Today its dirt-flu, tomorrow it will be something else that these germophobes will be quaking in fear about contracting.

It reminds me of the James Harriot books when he was a vet. One of his observations was the "the knacker's children" were the healthiest kids in the village.
For those who don't know Brit slang: "A knacker (or knackerman/knacker man) is a person who collects, removes, and disposes of dead, dying, or injured animals—especially worn-out horses—from farms, roadsides, or private property."

Me personally? Not worried in the least.

Hey, mysophobes - Thailand had 80 cases of leprosy in 2024. shock1 "Ekkk!" Leprosy is no doubt on the rise and will "get you" if you fail to take precautions like compulsive hand washing.

How fortunate to live in times where we have so many diseases to be needlessly afraid of.

If you REALLY want to expose yourself to some random germs, substances, viruses, in the hope that doing so will make you STRONGER, and improve your IMMUNE RESPONSE, in general, to all things, then I suggest that you just get ahold of some of this experimental ANIMAL vaccine, which works well in preventing Melioidoss in MICE....

Or...BLEACH....use bleach injections to clean oneself out.

Or BOTH.....

=============

Let us hope that the progress in vaccine manufacture/creation will finally reach a point where many more vaccines will become far easier to create.
