‘Superpower suicide’: Trump Is driving US toward global decline

Timothy Snyder

A leading historian has issued a stark warning that the United States is undermining its own global dominance under Donald Trump, describing the trajectory as “superpower suicide”. The claim, from Timothy Snyder, adds intellectual weight to growing concerns that Washington’s erratic direction is eroding its long-term strength.

At stake, he argues, is not just policy failure — but the future of the US as a coherent global power.

State Power Eroding — Institutions Under Strain

Snyder’s core argument is blunt: a superpower must function as a stable state, and that stability is now in question. He points to governance driven by personal loyalty and enrichment rather than institutional continuity.

The result, he suggests, is a system that resembles rule by personality rather than durable statecraft — a shift that weakens credibility at home and abroad.

Succession Crisis — Democracy in the Balance

Central to his warning is the erosion of democratic norms. By casting doubt on elections and political succession, Snyder argues the administration is destabilising one of the core pillars of superpower status.

Without confidence in continuity, allies hesitate and rivals probe for weakness. The long-term damage, he warns, may outlast any single presidency.

Future Surrendered — China Steps In

Snyder also highlights strategic drift, particularly on energy and technology. By doubling down on fossil fuels while rivals invest in renewables, the US risks ceding future leadership to competitors like China.

In his view, global power is built on forward-looking policy — and Washington is moving in reverse.

Allies Alienated, Rivals Emboldened

Recent confrontations abroad have further exposed vulnerabilities. Trade tensions, military escalations and strained alliances have left the US increasingly isolated.

Snyder argues a true superpower manages adversaries while strengthening partnerships — not weakening both simultaneously.

Education and Innovation — A Quiet Collapse

The warning extends to domestic policy. Cuts to education and politicisation of science, he says, are hollowing out the foundations of future power.

For students, researchers and global talent, the message is clear: opportunity may lie elsewhere.

‘Attempted’, Not Inevitable — But Time Is Short

Despite the bleak assessment, Snyder stops short of fatalism. He frames the moment as a choice, not a destiny.

But with institutions strained and strategic direction uncertain, the window to reverse course may be narrowing fast.

Bye Bye Miss American Pie.

And good riddance.

But, before you go, divert all financial support of Israel into American education and healthcare. Look after your own a bit more, and let Israel deal with the consequences of their atrocious actions alone. 🙂

Snyder is a brilliant historian. He's right on all counts here.

If you want to understand Ukraine's position read his 'Bloodlands' book (if you can stomach it. I had to put it down 3 times for a while in order to finish it - it's very tough reading.).

There's barely a Ukrainian alive who'd surrender to Russia and that book tells why and why we have to support and help them.

Fantastic research and analysis. Not only Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin but On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century; The Road to Unfreedom: Russia, Europe, America; and Black Earth: The Holocaust As History and Warning.

Real ideas for the real world.
