Sim card router/modem advice [2026]

Featured Replies

I'm tired of using my phone's hot spot, and looking for a permanent home wifi solution

I need a router that uses a sim card and is dual band 2.4/5ghz (I have some older devices)

I've been looking at this one, but it's only wifi 4... is there a better / more modern option?

anything under 4000b is fine, but I'm not looking to win any medals for spending more money than I have to 🤷🏻‍♂️

thanks

WiFi 4 is sure not state of the art.

But: what SIM, provider, plan, speed and volume will you use?

Only then can you decide whether you need to spend for WiFi 5/6.

sorry, I didn't realize that mattered...

I was just gonna get a true/dtac 12mo 100GBs/mo at 15/20MB for 2xxxB/year deals

is that enough info? or do I need to do more research first?

thanks again

802.11ac is theoretically WiFi 5, though of course WiFi 5 is already thirteen years old.

Personally I would pay more attention to the source of Internet than the modem. Partially because you are looking at relatively low speed packages.

Do you already utilise TRUE? If so, what speeds do you get at your location, via https://testmy.net ?(Check both Up and Down, using the Combined option)

Determine which is the best network at your location, then buy a router to match. Don't assume that you will automatically receive the advertised speeds for any SIM package.

Buy a SIM card from the network that you don't currently use, for the purpose of a comparison.

TRUE have a 30Mbps/100GB offer, AIS 15Mbps/100GB, but if you can only pull down 10Mbps at your location with TRUE, but obtain the full 15Mbps with AIS...

The other aspect being Upload speed. One might be closer to symmetrical. That might not matter to you initially, until you need to upload a large file, only then noticing that the Upload speed is perhaps a mere 20% of the advertised Download speed.

https://www.tp-link.com/uk/home-networking/5g-4g-router/archer-mr505/ is a later version with similar specification, at a lower price. Perhaps 2200 to 2600 baht.

If you are already using TRUE, you can grab an AIS SIM here: https://www.lazada.co.th/products/pdp-i1487422386-s3917664775.html

If AIS works out better for you, their 12 month pack is here: https://www.lazada.co.th/products/pdp-i5351932036.html

2750 baht

AIS does have an Unlimited 10Mbps option for 280 baht monthly, though it's not clear if it is available to everyone.

If TRUE, their Unlimited 15Mbps pack is here: https://www.alottechs.com/product/select-sim-thor

4000 baht

Alternatively, their 20 Mbps(possibly upgraded to 30Mbps, check current status before purchase) is here: https://www.alottechs.com/product/sim-true-20mbps-100gb-select

2300 baht

Again, don't assume you will receive those speeds at your location. Test first, with the speed test I suggested. Not any other.

You should be able to find the same via Lazada, my link is more for people who want to choose their number.

I'm currently using -dtac 12mo 100GB/mo at 15Mbps for 2xxxB/year

my testmy.net results are 15 Mbps down and 12 Mbps up

the true 20 30Mbps 100 GB and archer-mr505 you linked both look good to me

true and dtac are the same network now right? so if my dtac gets good reception then true should also, right?

So, I think I'm good to go

ok, got the modem/router and sim card... but the sim isn't working. Will connect to the network (true) but won't really pass data. I can ping google in cmd prompt, but after a few packets it times out

I did check the router with my current sim and it works great

When I put my new sim in my phone, the true app says it's bunk and I need to go into a true shop

so, unless you know a trick, that's what I'll have to do... do 7-11s still work for stuff like this?

Thanks again for your help in getting me this far

Did you register the SIM with your passport? If not, you'll need to do so. You can do it online.

https://app.true.th/prepaid-registration

Of course I have no idea which vendor you chose, so cannot vouch for the SIM that you received.
