Three moves Trump must make to escape Iran ‘mess’ before it’s too late

The former head of the CIA has delivered a blunt verdict: the United States is trapped in a deepening Iran crisis of its own making. And unless Donald Trump shifts course fast, the costs—strategic, economic, and human—will keep rising.

Writing with the authority of decades in diplomacy, William J. Burns says the current trajectory is defined by “unforced errors” and short-term thinking.

A War Built on Miscalculation

Burns argues Washington fatally misread Iran. The assumption that targeted strikes and leadership decapitation would trigger collapse has instead hardened resistance.

He warns that tactical wins have been mistaken for strategy. The result: a conflict drifting without a coherent endgame, driven more by impulse than planning.

Patience Over Panic

The first fix is time. Burns says the White House must abandon its “addiction to quick fixes” and accept that Iran’s leadership won’t fold under pressure alone.

Instead, he calls for a longer game—containing nuclear risks while gradually shaping political conditions. It’s slower, less dramatic, but far more durable.

All Tools, Not Just Bombs

Second, Burns urges a full-spectrum approach. Military pressure alone won’t cut it.

He points to the need for coordinated diplomacy, credible intelligence, and allied backing. Without that, U.S. leverage fragments—and adversaries gain ground.

The Cost of ‘Mowing the Grass’

Finally, Burns takes aim at the stopgap strategy of repeated strikes without long-term vision.

He warns it has already backfired—strengthening Iran’s position, unsettling Gulf allies, and opening doors for rivals like China and Russia, while rattling global markets.

The message is clear: without a strategic reset, the cycle will deepen.

Burns’ closing line lands with quiet force: the hole is deep, but not irreversible—if Washington stops digging.
