Repair screw holes in corrugated roof panel

Featured Replies

The roof panels in the kitchen extension are held down by J hooks and they weep slightly in heavy rain. I want to change them to normal screws with rubber washers.

However, new screws will need new holes to align with the steel purlins leaving me with holes. So, i am looking for a permanent repair for holes in the corrugated cement tiles.

Alternatively, i could replace the sheets as it is only as small area of around 10m2 and this would be a permanent fix.

Any ideas?

Done that before

Small screw holes in a metal sheet roof can be repaired with a small metal patch and Araldite epoxy. Clean and dry the area first, remove rust and dirt, roughen the surface a little, then glue the metal patch over the hole with enough epoxy to seal all edges. Press it down firmly and let it cure fully before exposing it to heavy rain.

Bolt/nuts/rubber washers is an option.

Even with a corrugated metal roof many have replaced perished rubber washers which are under the screw heads. So why not do the same with the existing J bolts.

Buy a bag of stainless washers and a bag of rubber washers and fit one to each J bolt? I'm sure any decent local builder can organize that job.

There is waterproof tape that you can put over the j bolts or holes. Not sure how long it will last but have been using it for a year on a metal roof that has leaked through the rubber washers.

If it were me, for 10 m2, would replace the roof.

I think it is the best long term solution. I will also use white sheets to try and lower the kitchen temperature.

If that is your chosen route then look at aluminum/styrene laminate. Many external/internal combos plus about an inch+ of insulation.

You could do it the "Chow Bann" way, Thai village way, dip some polystyrene foam in petrol, which will make it soft, then just put it over the nail/screw hole, it will stick and will remain softish, it does work, the cheap Thai way.

If you want a new roof, get a new roof, but I would just go with a glob of mastic/roof-seal over the screw-heads
