Badenoch vows zero-tolerance crackdown on crime and welfare

“Bring back consequences”

Kemi Badenoch has launched a hard-edged pitch to voters, promising a zero-tolerance crackdown on everyday crime and what she calls a broken welfare system.

In a blunt warning, the Conservative leader said Britain has become too soft on offences that “make life miserable” — from shoplifting and fare dodging to vandalism and public drug use.

“People who break the law should feel the full force of it,” she said. “Instead, law-abiding people get punished while criminals get away with it.”

Targeting low-level crime

Badenoch said a future Conservative government would adopt a “broken windows” approach — the tough policing strategy associated with 1990s New York — to stamp out minor offences before they escalate.

Her plan includes funding for 10,000 extra police officers and expanding tools like live facial recognition to track down the estimated 24,000 criminals currently at large.

She also took aim at policing priorities, arguing officers should focus less on minor driving offences and more on crimes affecting communities.

“You can drive slightly over the speed limit and get punished,” she said. “But walk into a shop and steal — and nothing happens. That has to change.”

Welfare ‘not a lifestyle choice’

The Tory leader also set out a sweeping overhaul of welfare, warning the current system is financially unsustainable.

She claimed benefits are increasingly treated as a “lifestyle choice” rather than a safety net, with the annual welfare bill now exceeding income tax revenues.

“If you can work, you should work,” she said, adding that claims based on “low-level conditions” would face tighter scrutiny.

Badenoch signalled further cuts beyond the £23 billion already proposed, arguing failure to act risks bankrupting the system.

Tougher stance on immigration

On immigration, Badenoch said Britain must take a harder line, including leaving the European Convention on Human Rights to make deportations easier.

She also called for stricter controls on asylum claims, framing migration policy as part of a wider effort to restore fairness for taxpayers.

Political battle lines drawn

Badenoch used the interview to attack Keir Starmer and his government, claiming it is too late for Labour to recover politically.

She also criticised Ed Miliband’s economic agenda, warning that green policies combined with closer EU ties could trigger “rapid deindustrialisation.”

Meanwhile, she dismissed the threat from Nigel Farage’s Reform party, insisting the Conservatives are now more united despite recent defections.

A tougher Conservative pitch

The message is clear: Badenoch is repositioning the Conservatives as the party of enforcement and discipline — tougher on crime, tougher on welfare, and tougher on borders.

“Government’s job is to be tough,” she said. “Let others do the soft stuff.”

My guess is that her pitch will resonate with a lot of people as the UK has become nearly lawless, and immigration is way out of control.

Its not UK immigration that's out of control , its the illegal immigrants just sailing over by boat thats out of control

Ethnic leader will be voted out of office at the next election, she won’t have a chance

Its not the electorate that decides that .

The people do not vote on who becomes Party leaders

The Tories have had time enough in power to do something about all this. They're only talking strong now because it looks like they will be replaced by Reform as the alternative to Labour. Even Badenoch is starting to sound like a Reformer.

As usual with most politicians in Europe or the UK...years of debate and talking..and very few factual steps. Democracy at it's limits.

Is Badenoch aware she’s a glass cliff appointee?

If the UK is "nearly lawless" then what does that make the US given that its levels of violent crime are much higher than the UK's?

The problem in the US is that the criminals are running the government. The UK still has a chance if the racists don't win.

That makes the US a nation that is completely out of control. There are areas in the US where a homeless person can walk into a store and take $900 worth of goods, walk right out the door and neither a security guard or anybody else will stop them, and the authorities will not be called.

Amerca is broken.

She is not an "ethnic leader". She is a UK citizen and has strong support in her riding. She is still ranked highly compared to her counterparts.
