Purported Epstein suicide note unsealed after years under seal

Federal judge releases handwritten note tied to 2019 jail incident

A handwritten note purportedly authored by Jeffrey Epstein has been released by a federal judge years after it was sealed as part of a separate criminal case — reigniting scrutiny over the disgraced financier’s final weeks in jail.

The document, described as a possible suicide note, emerged from court filings connected to Epstein’s former cellmate, Nicholas Tartaglione, who claimed he discovered it hidden inside a graphic novel after Epstein was found injured in his cell in July 2019.

‘NO FUN. NOT WORTH IT’

The note contains a series of bitter and theatrical lines apparently reflecting on Epstein’s legal troubles and imprisonment.

“They investigated me for month — FOUND NOTHING!!!” it begins, before referring to decades-old charges. Another line reads: “It is a treat to be able to choose one’s time to say goodbye.”

The note ends with the underlined phrase: “NO FUN. NOT WORTH IT!!”

While the language resembles phrases Epstein reportedly used in private emails and other writings, The New York Times stressed it has not independently authenticated the document or confirmed that Epstein personally wrote it.

Hidden for years inside sealed court filings

The note was unsealed by Kenneth M. Karas after media requests sought its release. Despite years of public fascination surrounding Epstein’s death, the document had remained buried within sealed filings tied to Tartaglione’s legal proceedings.

According to court records, Tartaglione’s attorneys reportedly authenticated the note at some stage, though details of how they did so have not been publicly explained.

The original document was apparently handed to the court in 2021 — nearly two years after Epstein’s death at the now-closed Metropolitan Correctional Center.

Questions surrounding Epstein’s death persist

Epstein died in August 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges involving underage girls. His death was officially ruled a suicide by New York’s medical examiner, but failures inside the jail — including malfunctioning cameras, sleeping guards, and procedural lapses — fuelled years of speculation and conspiracy theories.

The newly released note relates not to Epstein’s death itself, but to an earlier incident weeks beforehand when he was discovered unconscious with marks around his neck.

Initially, Epstein reportedly suggested his cellmate may have attacked him, though he later told investigators he had “never had any issues” with Tartaglione.

Cellmate says note was potential evidence

Tartaglione, now serving four life sentences following his conviction in a quadruple murder case, has long denied assaulting Epstein. He claims he kept the note because he believed it might help defend him if accusations resurfaced.

According to his account, he found the paper folded inside a book after Epstein was removed from the shared cell.

Public fascination remains intense

Few criminal cases in recent American history have generated as much enduring suspicion and fascination as Epstein’s downfall and death. His ties to politicians, royalty, billionaires, and celebrities transformed the scandal into a global obsession, while unanswered questions surrounding prison failures kept public attention fixed on every new revelation.

Federal prosecutors acknowledged that there was now “strong public interest” in the circumstances surrounding Epstein’s death when agreeing not to oppose release of the note.

Another fragment in an unresolved story

The newly public document is unlikely to settle debate over Epstein’s final days. Instead, it adds yet another unsettling layer to a case already clouded by secrecy, institutional failures, and endless speculation.

Whether the note is ultimately proven authentic or not, its release ensures that scrutiny surrounding Jeffrey Epstein — and the mystery that still surrounds his death — remains far from over.
