In Ho Chi Minh City, 16 primary schools are piloting a new recycling initiative aimed at transforming beverage cartons into a valuable resource. Led by Tetra Pak, the Carton for Communities program focuses on teaching students effective recycling and waste separation techniques. This effort is part of a broader push by Việt Nam to improve sustainability and reduce waste.

The campaign is designed to leverage the influence of children as "reverse change agents," encouraging them to spread positive recycling habits to their families. Students participate in a simple four-step process: drink it clean, tuck in the straw, close the lid, and flatten the carton. The initiative connects schools with collection teams and recycling partners, ensuring a closed-loop system that reintroduces recycled products back to the community.

Nguyễn Đỗ Thu Minh, Tetra Pak Vietnam’s Sustainability Manager, highlighted the challenge of waste separation at the source, expressing hopes of building a robust collection system. Previously, Tetra Pak's School Recycling Programme had reached around 1,200 schools in Bắc Ninh and Bình Dương, showcasing the potential for expansion. Bùi Duyên, Director of SBCC Vietnam, emphasized the role of the program in fostering a sense of responsibility among students, using engaging tools to make recycling an inspiring activity.

The initiative aims to address the increasing waste of beverage cartons in cities like Hà Nội and HCM City by tapping into the large volume of recyclable paper cartons produced annually. Despite their recyclability, cartons often remain unsorted, calling for a stronger focus on education and community involvement to move towards a circular economy in Việt Nam.
