Scientists warn developing Pacific system could trigger extreme heat, floods, droughts and wildfire disasters worldwide as climate fears intensify

Scientists are warning that a potentially powerful El Niño event could dramatically reshape global weather patterns in 2026, raising fears of devastating heatwaves, floods, megadroughts and wildfire outbreaks across large parts of the world.

Just weeks after the Pacific Ocean’s long-running La Niña phase officially faded into neutral conditions, meteorologists are now increasingly convinced that its far more dangerous warm counterpart is rapidly emerging.

And the early signals have experts deeply concerned.

Virtually every major global forecasting model now points toward an El Niño developing in the coming months — with several suggesting it could become one of the strongest events seen in decades.

Zeke Hausfather, climate scientist at Berkeley Earth and the Breakthrough Institute, said the median forecast across climate models points toward “quite a strong event.”

“This would put us on track to have an event that is among the strongest El Niños seen in recent history,” he warned, although he stressed there is still uncertainty at this stage.

Planet Already Running Hot

The growing alarm comes as much of the planet is already experiencing unusually high temperatures following months of abnormal ocean warming.

Scientists fear a strong El Niño could pile even more heat on top of long-term climate warming, pushing parts of the Earth into dangerous new territory.

The Pacific Ocean — effectively the engine room of global weather — has seen sea surface temperatures surge sharply in recent weeks, particularly in the central and eastern equatorial regions associated with El Niño formation.

Meteorologists warn the phenomenon can dramatically alter atmospheric circulation worldwide, shifting rainfall patterns, intensifying storms and worsening climate extremes.

Past El Niño events have been linked to catastrophic flooding, crop failures, deadly droughts and marine ecosystem collapse.

They have also fueled massive coral bleaching events and devastating wildfires across multiple continents.

“Like A Giant Ringing A Bell”

The scale of El Niño’s influence is so enormous that the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration once compared it to “a giant ringing a bell so loudly that it knocks the dishes off the shelves in a house down the street.”

The climate pattern works by changing where heat is released from the Pacific Ocean into the atmosphere, altering wind systems and weather patterns across the globe.

Scientists say the current situation is especially worrying because the oceans are already exceptionally warm before El Niño has even fully formed.

The northeast Pacific recently reached its highest recorded average temperature, while marine heatwaves have persisted for months along parts of the US West Coast.

In some regions, ocean temperatures have been running 3 to 4 degrees above normal.

Meanwhile, severe drought continues to grip huge areas of the United States.

Climate Change Adding Fuel To The Fire

Researchers increasingly believe climate change is amplifying the risks linked to El Niño events.

Warmer oceans globally mean that when El Niño develops, it may have an even greater impact on weather extremes.

Scientists are particularly worried about marine ecosystems, where prolonged heat stress can devastate fisheries and coral reefs.

There are also fears that hotter and drier conditions in some regions could create explosive wildfire risks later this year and into 2026.

Studies have already linked lingering La Niña conditions to elevated fire dangers across parts of the American West and Southwest.

Hurricane Season Could Also Shift

One of El Niño’s best-known effects is its tendency to suppress Atlantic hurricane formation by increasing disruptive wind shear across the tropical Atlantic.

But experts caution that this does not eliminate the risk of destructive storms altogether.

Major hurricanes have still struck the United States during previous El Niño years, particularly in the Gulf region.

And elsewhere in the world, El Niño can strengthen tropical cyclone risks in the Pacific.

Scientists Urge Caution

Despite the growing concern, meteorologists stress it is still too early to know exactly how powerful this El Niño will become.

Spring has historically been one of the hardest periods for climate models to predict accurately.

NOAA currently places the chances of a strong El Niño at roughly one in four, although expectations may shift higher when updated forecasts are released later this month.

Climate researcher Brian McNoldy cautioned that while many models show strong agreement on El Niño formation, that does not necessarily mean a historic event is guaranteed.

Still, scientists across the world are now watching the Pacific with mounting unease.

Because if the developing forecasts are correct, 2026 could bring some of the most disruptive and dangerous weather conditions seen in years.
