Baguio City officials, led by Mayor Benjamin Magalong, have issued a cautionary warning against using unauthorized motorcycle-for-hire services due to significant safety concerns. Magalong highlighted the risks posed by these unregulated taxis, emphasizing the absence of driver safety training and insurance coverage for passengers. This announcement aims to address the increasing traffic congestion and potential road accidents in the city, which are exacerbated by these illegal operations.

The operation of unauthorized motorcycle taxis has been linked to numerous risks, particularly on Baguio’s challenging terrain characterized by steep and uphill roads. Mayor Magalong pointed out the lack of clear accountability for drivers within this informal sector, noting that the Department of Transportation-Cordillera has not issued any permits for these services within the city. In response, Magalong has advocated for revoking the licenses of drivers engaged in such activities to combat the proliferation of illegal motorcycle taxis.

The concerns raised by city officials have stirred reactions among residents and transportation experts. Many agree that unregulated services jeopardize commuter safety and demand stronger enforcement of transportation regulations. There is a push for formalizing viable alternatives that can be safely integrated into the city's public transportation system while mitigating congestion and ensuring commuter safety.

Looking ahead, the city government plans to intensify monitoring and enforcement actions against illegal motorcycle-for-hire services. Discussions with transportation authorities aim to explore legal frameworks that could regulate these services more effectively. Meanwhile, residents are encouraged to use authorized modes of transportation to ensure their safety while commuting around Baguio.

Very nice but often when you see how the "legal" drivers behave, the risk is no less with a official bike taxi. So might as well pay less and pray for the best like with a legal driver.

Sounds like the legal taxis are sour grapes over the freelancers. Forget it, throw out the hand and first one there gets the business. Isn't any difference safety-wise.
