A Toronto court has commenced the trial of Khoa Tran and Quynh Isabelle Nguyen, who are accused in the death of their neighbor, filmmaker Reeyaz Habib. Tran faces charges of second-degree murder, while Nguyen is charged with accessory after the fact and indignity to a human body. The alleged murder, prompted by disputes over barbecue smoke, occurred in June 2023 at a condominium building in Liberty Village.

Authorities discovered Habib’s body on June 8, 2023, inside a garbage compactor. He had previously complained about barbecue smoke from Tran and Nguyen's townhouse, which was located below his apartment. An agreement had been made between the neighbors for Tran to notify Habib before using the grill.

During the trial, testimony was provided by Linh Hua, who was temporarily staying with the couple. She reported being awakened on June 6 by noises and a scream for help. Hua claimed Nguyen told her not to worry and advised her to return to sleep. Following the incident, the couple allegedly instructed Hua not to speak with police.

Hua testified that after Tran's arrest, she left the residence, citing discomfort and a lack of alternatives for housing or support. The prosecution also presented evidence suggesting Tran's DNA was found on materials wrapping Habib’s body. The trial, which could last four weeks, continues to unfold as further witnesses are expected to testify.
