Water levels in nine major dams across Luzon, Philippines, have fallen significantly, with some below normal levels. This decline, following Pagasa's warning of a 79% chance of El Niño, has raised alarms over potential droughts and dry spells.

Angat Dam, Metro Manila’s primary water source, has dropped from 190.17 meters in April to 178.85 meters, well below its normal high of 210 meters. The decline poses risks to the water supply for 90% of Metro Manila and irrigation for 28,000 hectares in Bulacan and Pampanga. Similarly, Ipo Dam and La Mesa Dam have experienced slight decreases, affecting the metropolitan area’s water distribution system.

Northern Luzon's hydroelectric dams, including Ambuklao and Binga, have also recorded declines, threatening power generation amid rising electricity demand due to the heat index reaching 37ºC to 46ºC. Decreasing water levels could impact electricity supply as dam turbines require sufficient water flow and pressure.

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines has placed the Luzon and Visayas grids on red alert, warning consumers to brace for potential outages as reserves dwindle.
