He was planning to do this on a visitors passport but I thought there was a 30 day limit? What is the best advise to give him given his length of stay??

I assume you are from Northampton England. If your friend is also British he can get a single entry tourist visa from Embassy or Consulate in UK . This would give 2 months and can be extended in Thailand for a further 30 days.

Or a double entry tourist visa which would give 4 months with a quick border run in the middle.

You say he wants to work his way round the country. If you literally mean working then he cannot work on a tourist visa.
