Cambodia Ranked World’s Best for Natural Environment

Cambodia has been named the top country globally for its natural environment, according to a new ranking by U.S. News & World Report. The survey placed the Kingdom ahead of the Seychelles and Slovenia, highlighting its success in preserving biodiversity and protected areas.

While Cambodia ranked 91st overall in the “Best Countries” index, its environmental score stood out. The report noted that nations with lower levels of industrialisation and urbanisation often achieve stronger results in safeguarding natural landscapes.

Minister of Environment Eang Sophalleth hailed the recognition as “a great honour”, pointing to the country’s extensive conservation efforts. Cambodia currently manages 73 protected areas covering more than seven million hectares — around 41% of its landmass.

These zones are crucial for maintaining forests, wildlife habitats and ecological balance, supported by stricter enforcement of environmental laws.

The ministry also emphasised that the achievement reflects policies established under former prime minister Hun Sen, now president of the Senate, and continued under Prime Minister Hun Manet’s administration. The government’s Pentagonal Strategy includes ambitious goals for sustainable development and a commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

For Cambodia, the accolade is more than symbolic. It reinforces the country’s reputation as a destination of natural beauty, while underscoring the importance of ongoing conservation in the face of global environmental challenges.
