Eyedrops for morning dry eyes?

Featured Replies

Can anyone recommend eyedrops for morning dry eyes?

Never had this problem before so never tried any kind of eyedrops.

Drink something on waking or eat something like watermelon. Don't get hooked on eyedrops.

If you google search "eye drops aseannow" you can find several threads on the subject.

If you have not had an ophthalmology exam in a long time, you might want to consider getting one as dry eye condition can be caused by underlying medical conditions other than environmental (blowing fans, dust). For example, I am starting to think that my dry eye condition might have been caused by clogged tear ducts due to poor hygiene around my eyelids and eyelashes. Since paying closer attention to the cleanliness around my eyes, my dry eye condition seems to have improved. Also you might be interested to know that bed mites can cause eye crust problems.

During a recent ophthalmology exam the doctor did a dry eye test, and said I indeed had a dry eye condition and prescribed Optive brand UD lubricant eye drops for sensitive eyes 30 vials. Price at hospital was 900 baht if I recall correctly. I Google searched if they were available OTC, and I found something similar for 300 baht, but looks like its under the "house warehouse" brand, not the "abbvie" brand I got from the hospital, so I don't know if quality is the same.

Edit: Link for similar product I found on line:

I bought them on Amazon

Oxyal is a brand of moisturizing and lubricating eye drops manufactured by Bausch + Lomb, specifically designed to relieve dry, irritated, and tired eyes. They are highly effective for symptoms caused by screen time, air conditioning, wind, or contact lens wear. They worked and had no side effects for my use.

So you cant find them on Lazada. Im also sceptical to use eyedrops, but once and awhile I need them, so good to have, and the 10ml bottle lasts long time

I use Abbvie “Cellufresh” preservative-free lubricant eye drops.

They come as 30 x 0.4ml single use vials in a small box, can be bought at most pharmacies.

Been using them for years, one drop in each eye is good for the day. I find one single use vial can last for 2 or 3 days.

I think the 10 ml bottle comes with preservative and I found that irritated my eyes.

Ask for eydrops without preservatives, hyaluronic acid (Hialid) or carboxymethylcellulose (Refresh plus).

Every pharmacy will stock it, different brands available.

From what I can see both carboxymethylcellulose and hyaluronic acid are perfectly safe in eyedrops. Is it the long names that you object to?

Preservatives can apparently be an irritant if using drops more than 4 times a day.

Preservative free eyedrops are single use.

The danger from bacteria in multi-use bottles is a concern.

I don't want multi-use bottles without preservatives.

I have found that the environment here promotes bacterial growth in foods that I would have thought were safe due to high salt or sugar content.

Fungal growth on bread is also common after a short time.

I have had a visible cloud of vapor rise from pickles in a jar and jam when opening the jars.

This I have never seen in temperate climates.

All other things being equal, I actually prefer preservatives because of these experiences.

I am trying OcuFresh DP (Bausch + Lomb).

"OcuFresh DP (Bausch + Lomb): Available widely in Thailand, these drops generally use Sodium perborate as a preservative. It is a gentle, "vanishing" preservative that turns into natural tears (water and oxygen) once it touches your eye."

This isa great advice! Sounds like you need an eye checkup with an ophthalmologist.

Any brand of sterile, natural tears with no preservatives will soothe your eyes. My dry eye was severe enough I had to use these drops every hour! Avoid commercial eyedrops which claim to get the red out.

@cdemundo said he thought his dry eye was due to poor lid and lash hygiene, that's almost always not the case, even if you just splash your face in the shower once a day.

Dry eye can also be cause by meibomian gland dysfunction. Each of our eyes has 70 of these on top and bottom eyelids. If those ducts get plugged, not enough oily meibum gets into your tear film, allowing the lubrication to dry out too fast.

In many cases, MGD is caused by Demodex face mites who love to next is your MGs and eat your delicious meibum. Plus having nighttime orgies on your face (not kidding)!

Eye docs have long waiting lists. Try the sterile natural tears in the meantime. You might consider a non-sterile eye gel overnight. That should have with dry eyes on waking.

No, I didn't say that.

It isn't anything more that an inconvenience and it looks like th Ocufresh drops are doing the trick.

long quote. OP asks for eyedrops, not food.

And it's highly recommended to use eye drops without preservatives.

There are many brands of opthalmic lubricants available in Thailand. Ask at any opharmacy (but larger ones will have wider range of choice)

Larger sizes will always have preservatives, smaller/single use ones sometimes do not.

You might try one pf these brands:

Cellufresh

Natear UD (single dose units)

Solufresh

You missed the point. The references to food were clear examples of bacterial contamination which is common in this environment.

The point is that introducing bacteria into our eyes is potentially very harmful.

I understand it's highly recommended by you to use eyedrops without preservatives.

But with multiple dose eyedrops preservatives are essential and there are very simple and safe preservatives used in several brands of eyedrops.

I don't argue with you about medicine, diagnose or scientific recommendations. It's useless just because of lack of knowledge. Don't answer please. I'm tired of your nonsense, sorry. If YOU personally like to take preservatives....up to you. I don't and hopefully OP.

"It's useless just because of lack of knowledge."

Agreed.

Sometimes it isn't what one doesn't know,

it's the things they know that just ain't so.

A flaming post had been removed. Please keep it civil.

Preservatives are essential in multi-use eye drop containers to avoid bacterial contamination. Some people's eyes are irritated by them, others not. Single use containers do not need preservatives as they are sterile until opened snd then used up at once, so this is a good slternative for those bothered by preservatives.

If you end up using them for a longer period of time, try different brands to see which works best for you. The viscosity of different brands can vary significantly. I have used Optive UD for years and find them just right: moderate viscosity so the tear film lasts a little while, but not overly viscous.

Warm compress with gentle fingertip massage of eyelids (wash hands well first) is good for helping keep the oil glands unblocked.

Occasional eyelid cleaning also helps - baby shampoo is good for this because it's formulated to not sting in the eyes as much as standard shampoo / soap.

Was going to give a lengthy reply, drop recommendations, eye oxidant supplement, hygiene & environmental markers etc, but OP comes across as a tad ungrateful, even confrontational to folks that have been generous enough to lend advice. I don’t get it. This is not a paid-for service. Mind your manners.

I responded to a post that contained only misinformation.

I am not gonna be grateful for misinformation.

"Tears Naturale Free", just clean water. Try it and if it works then no med needed. Recommended by ophthalmologist. Fixed my dry eyes.

Seems active ingredients are:

  • Dextran 70 (0.1%): A lubricating polymer that helps soothe and protect the ocular surface.

  • Hypromellose 2910 (0.3%): Also known as HPMC, this water-soluble polymer creates a long-lasting, moisturizing, and protective film over the eye.

I will try this next, apparently available at Boots.

Most basic 'natural tear' dry eye lubricating drops contain some form of sodium carmellose or similar, like Cellufresh, as recommended by many here including Sheryl.

They are available online from:
https://bangkokdrugstore.com/

Dry eye, particularly in the morning, could mean your eyes are being exposed to dry air overnight, or that your eyelids are not closing entirely during sleep.

To remedy this, you may need a gel- based lubricating eye drop.

Nevertheless, you should consult an ophthalmologist to find out the reason for your dry eye.

I use Systane. It's quite expensive in US but about one third the cost here. Genteal is another good brand. These are refreshing drops and do nothing for redness.

If you want to get redness out go with Naphcon-A.

Histaoff is basic Visine if you're familiar with that brand
