People who think this is due to politics or parties are hopelessly naive, or perhaps looking for change they can believe in!

You were a teenager once. Would a curfew have guided your actions? Eff no, a curfew would only make it more fun to avoid the police!

Mindless property damage, though, must be peer pressure. It can hardly be blamed on parental influence. Yes, the demise of the nuclear family and the fact corporados have made sure both parents need to work to eat are major components.

Realise that kids today don’t have the benefit of growing up with the Nelsons or Cleavers. They don’t have those 1950s role models. Yep, our fathers drank and our Mums popped benzos but we only had one car and a hot meal on the table every night entire family required no excuses. Hot breakfast with family, too, and packed fresh school lunch in a paper bag. We didn’t need water bottles because water everywhere was safe to drink.

So they don’t have the 1950s and they didn’t have the freedom of the 1960s, either. They never learned to believe in anything, never thought to take a stand and stick to it.

Which brings us to consumerism. Every kid has to have the right jeans, the right shoes, the right backpack. Other kids kill for those shoes. My family shopped in thrift stores; as a teenaged hippie, I ’shopped’ in the Digger Free Store.

Gotta admit, life looks pretty empty these days. It’s as hardscrabble as the dustbowl in the cities. Excel at school only to have no job waiting. My PhD nephew works at the post office.

The answer lies in giving kids a purpose because you’ll never succeed in telling them what to do. Don’t bring race into it. Often the hardest-working kids are minorities.

The need for more institutionalization of people who are risks to public safety.
