Indoctrinate and enlist: Myanmar’s new pipeline

Myanmar’s military has unveiled a controversial plan to recruit high school students, sparking fears of indoctrination and forced enlistment among the country’s youth.

Nearly two months after General Ye Win Oo became commander‑in‑chief, the armed forces announced the creation of Youth Education Training Schools, set to open in Naypyitaw and Yangon’s Hlegu Township from the 2026‑27 academic year. Applications are already under way for Grade 10‑12 students aged 16 to 19, who must undergo medical checks and strict screening similar to officer training at the Defence Services Academy.

Former officers say the initiative is designed to build a fresh pipeline of recruits. “It’s about creating a source of manpower for the army,” explained Swe Taw, a defector. Education experts warn the schools will indoctrinate teenagers at what they call the “golden age” for shaping minds. “At 15 to 17, they will absorb anything,” said a retired ministry official.

The military has long operated schools for soldiers’ families, but this new programme directly targets civilian students. Ye Win Oo insists it will strengthen national defence, yet analysts argue it is a bid to spread propaganda and replenish ranks amid growing hostility since the 2021 coup.

Economic hardship and high unemployment have left many families vulnerable. Promises of free food, lodging and allowances make the schools appear a lifeline. “For families with no alternatives, these schools will appear as a lifeline,” said former Major Naung Yoe. But critics warn the incentives mask coercion.

U Aye Lwin of the All Burma Students’ Democratic Front voiced alarm: “We see the future of our youth being destroyed. Forced recruitment ruins their lives, and when their future is gone, the country’s future is destroyed too.”

Observers say the initiative reflects the regime’s desperation. With conscription law enforcement tightening and public trust collapsing, Myanmar’s generals are turning to classrooms to secure their next generation of soldiers.
