Myanmar army retakes Thai border hub, thousands flee

Myanmar’s military has recaptured the strategic border town of Mawdaung, a key trade gateway with Thailand, after a 15‑day offensive that forced around 4,000 civilians to flee nearby villages.

The regime’s Ministry of Information claimed the operation, backed by artillery and airstrikes, killed at least 24 resistance fighters. Local Karen National Union (KNU) officials confirmed they had lost control of the town, which had been seized by resistance forces last November.

Reports say the counteroffensive began with a 50‑truck convoy of reinforcements dispatched to Thebyu village, 41 kilometres away, before three columns advanced to retake Mawdaung. Volunteers assisting the displaced said residents from nine surrounding villages joined the exodus.

Mawdaung is a vital hub for seafood exports from Myeik on Myanmar’s Andaman coast to Thailand, and for imports of cement, motorcycles and fruit. It was first opened as an official border trade post in 2013, but has long been contested. The KNU’s district headquarters was based there until the junta seized it in 1990.

The recapture underscores the military’s renewed push under General Ye Win Oo, who became commander‑in‑chief in March. Since then, regime forces have retaken at least five towns, including Mawdaung in Tanintharyi, Falam and Tonzang in Chin State, and Indaw and Maw Luu in Sagaing Region. Coup leader Min Aung Hlaing was installed as president shortly after Ye Win Oo’s appointment, consolidating the junta’s grip.

For civilians, the latest offensive means more upheaval in a region already scarred by conflict. Aid groups warn that the displacement of thousands from Mawdaung highlights the growing humanitarian toll of the military’s campaign to reclaim border trade hubs and resistance‑held territory.
