A primary school teacher has been arrested in southern Shan State after allegedly stabbing two women to death in a dispute linked to online gambling debts.

The attack took place on 19 May in Myin Mu village, Pindaya Township. Police say the suspect, Daw Nu Nu Htwe, entered the home of Daw Mya Kyi at around 7pm demanding money and valuables. When Daw Mya Kyi and her niece, Ma San San Aye, refused, she allegedly attacked them with a knife.

Witnesses reported that Daw Mya Kyi suffered a fatal wound to her abdomen, while her niece was stabbed multiple times. Their cries alerted family members nearby, who rushed to help and called an ambulance. Both women died later in hospital despite emergency treatment.

Authorities detained Daw Nu Nu Htwe shortly afterwards. She now faces charges under Myanmar’s Penal Code, including murder, unlawful house‑breaking at night and causing grievous hurt with dangerous weapons.

Local residents told reporters the suspect had become addicted to online gambling, particularly digital slot and “buffalo” games that have spread rapidly across rural Shan State since last year. Campaigners say worsening poverty and the ongoing political crisis have driven many into gambling in search of quick financial returns, fuelling crime and social unrest.

Civil society groups warn that addiction has already led to a rise in petty thefts and armed robberies in the region. This case marks a grim escalation into deadly violence.

The murders occurred near the border of Ywangan Township, an area known for support of the junta‑backed Union Solidarity and Development Party. Community leaders say the unchecked spread of gambling has compounded insecurity, leaving families fearful and vulnerable.

For villagers in Myin Mu, the killings have brought shock and grief. What began as a demand for money has exposed deeper social fractures, where desperation and addiction can turn lethal. Authorities now face mounting pressure to crack down on illegal gambling networks and provide support for communities at risk.
