Myanmar Media Pressured Over China Encroachment

Myanmar’s military regime is tightening control over domestic media after reports that China has advanced border fences into Myanmar territory in northern Shan State.

On 15 May, the regime‑installed Press Council summoned local outlets, citing a letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that warned against coverage which might harm relations with Beijing. Journalists were told not to disclose details of the meeting.

“The regime does not dare respond to China directly. Instead, they pressure those they can control,” one reporter said, criticising the authorities for silencing coverage rather than addressing the issue diplomatically.

Villagers in Chinshwehaw and other towns say new fences have pushed at least 15 metres into Myanmar, and in some areas more than 100 metres, swallowing streams and pathways that once marked the boundary. Residents claim homes have ended up on the Chinese side.

China has maintained close ties with Myanmar’s information authorities and the Press Council, frequently inviting members on visits. Observers believe Beijing complained about the coverage, prompting the warnings.

The Foreign Ministry insists inspections found no encroachment in accessible areas, but admitted other sections were “inaccessible”. Officials said confirmed violations would be handled through diplomatic channels.

Critics accuse the regime of trading sovereignty for Chinese patronage. Armed groups including the United Wa State Army have stepped up patrols near border markers, while the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army said construction in Chinshwehaw was linked to a new border gate.

China’s fencing projects have previously breached bilateral agreements, including the 1960 Boundary Treaty and 1961 Protocol, which forbid permanent construction within a 10‑metre buffer zone. Despite these frameworks, unilateral fortifications have continued, most recently under Beijing’s “Southern Great Wall” initiative launched in 2020.

For Myanmar’s journalists, the latest warnings highlight the risks of reporting on sensitive issues: caught between a regime unwilling to confront Beijing and a powerful neighbour reshaping the frontier.
