Sweden arms Ukraine with Gripens in major fighter jet push

Ukraine is edging closer to a major upgrade in air power after Sweden signalled it will transfer JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets to Kyiv, opening the door to one of Europe’s most politically sensitive and militarily significant aircraft deals since Russia’s invasion began.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson is expected to formally announce the move at Uppland Air Force Base, with negotiations also beginning on future deliveries of the more advanced Gripen E model. Ukrainian officials are expected to finance part of the deal through EU-backed credit mechanisms.

Kyiv Targets A New Air War Advantage

The initial package reportedly centres on the Gripen C/D variant — a lightweight multirole fighter specifically designed for high-intensity conflict close to Russia’s borders.

For Ukraine, the aircraft’s biggest advantage is survivability. Unlike traditional Western jets requiring major airbases, the Gripen can launch from highways, short runways and dispersed locations — a critical capability as Russia intensifies missile strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure.

Fast turnaround times also matter. The aircraft can reportedly be refuelled and rearmed in under 10 minutes for air combat missions, allowing Ukrainian forces to keep jets moving under constant threat.

Gripen E Raises Stakes With Moscow

Talks over the newer Gripen E variant could prove even more consequential.

The upgraded fighter carries the AESA-based Raven ES-05 radar system and can deploy long-range Meteor missiles capable of striking targets beyond 100 kilometres. Military analysts view that combination as a serious challenge to Russian aircraft operating near the front line.

Powered by a General Electric F414G engine, the Gripen E can reportedly reach speeds of 2,500 km/h with a combat radius exceeding 800 kilometres.

Europe Deepens Its Commitment

The fighter discussions build on a letter of intent signed by Sweden and Ukraine last year covering a potential purchase of 100 to 150 Gripens.

Stockholm previously indicated deliveries of Gripen E aircraft could begin within three years of a final agreement being signed. The move underlines how European governments are shifting from emergency weapons support towards long-term military integration with Ukraine.

For the Kremlin, it is another warning that Western backing for Kyiv is becoming more sophisticated, more entrenched and far harder to reverse.
