Cambodia has issued a new protest against Thailand, accusing its neighbour of consolidating military occupation through the construction of Buddhist statues and flagpoles on Cambodian soil.

In a statement released on 30 May, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said the actions breach the ceasefire agreement signed on 27 December 2025.

The ministry warned that Thailand continues to violate Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in areas seized by Thai forces.

Officials highlighted the building of at least 36 Buddha statues in Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey provinces, along with two flagpoles in Preah Vihear. The ministry argued these measures go beyond maintaining military positions, instead reinforcing unlawful occupation through permanent structures, barriers, and cultural activities.

The statement stressed that such actions contradict the Joint Statement of the 3rd Special Meeting of the General Border Committee, which committed both sides to halt troop movements and resume border demarcation through the Joint Boundary Commission.

Cambodia reiterated it does not recognise any boundary line established by force or unilateral claims.

Phnom Penh urged Bangkok to respect the December agreement, saying adherence is essential to restoring trust, ensuring peace, and maintaining good neighbourly relations.

The dispute underscores the fragility of the frontier, where unresolved demarcation has repeatedly sparked diplomatic friction. Cambodia’s latest protest signals growing frustration over what it sees as Thailand’s attempts to entrench its occupation, raising the stakes for renewed dialogue and regional stability.

When the Thailand Kingdom invaded the Muslim Kingdom of Patani it followed with the same occupation with Buddhist temples and statues.

No problem, they can be destroyed with a backhoe, just like Thailand did when it destroyed Cambodian Hindu and Buddhist statues!
