Myanmar blast leaves village in ruins

Witnesses have described scenes of devastation after a massive explosion tore through a village in northern Myanmar, killing dozens and injuring scores more.

The blast struck Kaung Tat, near the Chinese border, around midday on Sunday. The Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), which controls the area, admitted the explosives had been stored for mining purposes. A spokesperson said on Monday that 39 people were confirmed dead and 75 injured, though local media and rescue groups reported higher figures, with at least 55 fatalities.

Residents told of a mushroom cloud rising into the sky and a shockwave that obliterated homes. “Everything was completely destroyed beyond recognition,” said one witness, who arrived at the site an hour later to find bodies and debris scattered across a vast crater.

Rescue workers said more than 200 houses were damaged, with some victims buried under rubble.

The TNLA has apologised for the accident, pledging to prevent a repeat and to support rescue and rehabilitation efforts. The group seized Namhkam Township in 2023 and has been in a fragile ceasefire with the military. Its governing body, the Ta’ang Land Council, has called for an investigation.

Myanmar’s mineral wealth, including rare earths, has become a lifeline for both the military regime and resistance forces since the 2021 coup. But lax safety standards have made accidents common. In April, a blast at a gunpowder facility in Pangsang killed 160 people.

The latest tragedy underscores the risks faced by communities caught between conflict and resource extraction. With many of the injured in critical condition, hospitals near the border are struggling to cope, and urgent blood supplies are needed.

A verdict on responsibility may take time, but for villagers who have lost homes and loved ones, the scale of destruction is already painfully clear.
