We (My Thai) wife and I went to the SCB to carry out a simple transaction, i.e. draw out some cash -normally takes 10 mins.

She was in there for an hour, when she came out she grabbed her ID and went back in fo another 20 minutes claiming she was " not finished yet"

When she finally returns, she has been sold some incomprehensible endowment policy over 25 years...the very thing I told her never to buy..hey.. who listens to falangs!

She was sold this buy the usual hard sell (to a Thai - cause they cannot say the word ??CK NO!) and she barely knows what it is.

What I would be grateful for is any ideas if the SCB adopt a " cooling off" period as they do in the UK , where you can go back and get your cash back for something you didn't fully understand or need.

I need some ammo for tomorrow and planned to use something on the lines of "We have it already...my company will not accept doubling up og life insurance...etc..etc..

"

They already screwed me for nearly 3K just to open an account- insisted  had personal liability cover to open the account- unfortunately, had no choice as the Kasikorn were a major pain in the arse...any advice would be appreciated.

(Yes Thais and money.....worst enemies..but she thought she was doing something positive as it had death cover and would give something back to the littl'n)

And yes...I know...I will have to bail them out when everything goes TITS up...so it is in my interest too!

Thanks in advance!

I feel for ya man.

My wife likes to make big decisions with the same amount of concern she has about what to have for lunch.

Often I find out extremely important information months after some decision has been made.

But hey a spontaneous life keeps things exciting no?

Believe me - they do not leave you alone! I was told in no uncertain terms that if I didn't buy the insurance - forget opening an account - I had already closed the TFB and needed an account for my visa, yes, if I had a better choice and a bit more time I would have told them where to go, but at the time it was a bit of "being over a barrel"

As for the endowment thing - I find that Thais (or maybe just my missus) cannot say NO to anyone in any sort of authority, be it banks/doctors/teachers or what, they will not make any sort of confrontation or stand.

I feel for ya man.

My wife likes to make big decisions with the same amount of concern she has about what to have for lunch.

Canuckamuck - LOL you're not kidding there! I sometimes have to laugh, (or cry)

I had bank letters going to the first address we had here- the mother in laws- which no one told me about -they opened them- read them- and discarded them- The letters were informing me of an "innactivity " charge, which was gradually eroding the remaining cash in the bank on a monthly basis! But was that important...not in a million years. To a Thai where we are, 10 baht is a big thing, but here we had a bank rippng me off on a monthly basis and they couldn't even be bothered to tell me, then even on the way back from the bank, we stopped to buy some Durian by the roadside, and some guy comes along on his bike, and tries to sell her some lottery tickets....I can see in the mirror "Mai Ow, Mee Laow..." which lasts for about half a minute, the guy is slightly persistent see, then she returns to the car with...you guessed it....we'll be buying the lotto check papers very soon!

That I can go along with to a certain extent, but the endowment lark!!!!

I asked- What do you get back? Answer: Some money.

How much? "They will send me a book"

What if you die before 25 years? "you get 200K" - and the cash you paid in, what happens to that? - SILENCE.

What is the hospital cover "Don't know" how much will they cover you for? SILENCE

What happens to all the cash you pay in if you stop paying/or die "Don't know"....followed by SILENCE

Spontaneous! you aren't half wrong there....

There is an automatic (probably indoctrinated) belief that anyone in any type of formal position is always superior and knows best, they will not question them! This really riles me at times as a lot of the holes they dig, they dig for themselves, and sympathy, well, I tolerate mistakes in general, we all make em, but repeated "blunders" what do you do?

I realise as a falang, my advice is worth diddly shit, as even the lowest form of life, as long as it is Thai will take precident over anything I have to say....LOL life goes on, I'll see what happens today, maybe kiss the 3K bye bye!

Thats Thais for you. Mine tells me how smart I am till it time for her to listen :o

Ha Ha!

They decided to build a "house" on some spare land, got in some cowboy builders, and proceeded with the construction.

I pointed out at least THREE times to various family members that the span between the supporting beams looke a little "Too large" (6 metres) obviously this was completely ignored, and what they have now is a 100K demolished lump of concrete wall....you can take a horse to water....

I was helping someone with a potential land deal for a resort property; my wife was the go between because the owner spoke Karen. The deal eventually was abandoned because the guy was unreasonable. It wasn't until a month later I found out that the land in question had a graveyard on it. I guess that wasn't important enough to bring up.

They tried to sell that to my wife while she was waiting for me at a SCB branch.

Same questions, no answer.

Something like, if she died, I would get 500K baht after paying 20K per year of something. Big deal.

Through my company, if I died, she gets 25 mil baht and did not even know that, let alone pay anything.

I'm fascinated how life/medical insurance seems to have taken off here.

It's not only the hard sell, it's that the Thai wife also wants it. My take is that it's based on a terror of slipping back into poverty. I always tell my wife that I have the means to look after her and have made a will in her favour. But she needs belt and braces.

Everything is impermanent and unsatisfactory, including sometimes marriage to a farang and so she never knows what the future holds. Will he still need her, will he still feed her when she's sixty four?

A way of projecting some security into the future is to get him to pay for some insurance now. There's just a chance that if somebody dies or is sick, the insurance company might pay something which'll help out in a sticky situation.

I suspect the insurance market here is pretty immature and I wouldn't trust the insurers an inch furthr that I can throw a buffalo.

How to deal with the OP's predicament I have no idea though if you can't read the policy document.

Recently they have also started calling with deals over the phone. Normally the calls seem to come late afternoon; that's a really bad time of day for me mood wise. It's great I really get to let off steam !

SCB are really into pushing products, its because they have opened up these subsidiary companies and then set their bank personnel targets for selling.

"Just say no"

Or in my husbands case "Just ask the wife".

It append in my family and I mirror the other posts that say that Thais are very easily influenced by compliments and promises, especially when they come from a poor background.

I should have known when all the premiums accompanied the triumphant return. 50K baht in some kind of investment, sold by the manager himself.

It took three days to reverse the transaction. I don't know what was said to the bank in Thai, but I was told the reason was a change of mind. Whether there is a cooling off period and the reversal of decision was during that period, I don't know.

Another reason to avoid going into a branch.

Would you believe it! everything sorted!

They charged 190 baht for "time" but apart from that got off without a hitch.

And as a bonus - they let the missus keep....it's like a list from the generation game...An Umbrella...a small SCB handbag...a restaurant directory....two propelling pencils....two stationary holders...an SCB bag..sorry Bruce already had that, an SCB carrier.....AND a CUDDLY TOY!....a small teddy bear that I fancy hanging from the back axle of the car ( as the

Thais where we live like to do- apparently it wards off EVIL!) and...the star prize tonight....a miniature Jatukarm....what luck! I can venture into my cobra infested land with neither care nor reason with my protective "Bhuddist" Trinket!...ah well at least we didn't get toasted.

They apparently hinted to the missus that " What's the problem?..you got a Falang for a husband.....mercinary BASTARDS!

Having been caught-out by SCB on this once, my wife now refuses to go into our local branch, where we have our local-banking & safety-deposit, unless I go with her as defence !

I suspect the conversation goes along the lines of "I'd just love to buy it, as I am convinced that it is totally for my own good, but my farang husband refuses to consider it, ... sigh ".
