Myanmar photojournalist Sai Zaw Thaike, serving a 20‑year prison sentence, has been awarded the Courage Prize at the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) Press Freedom Awards in Marseille.

The ceremony, held on 1 June at the Palais du Pharo as part of the World News Media Congress, honoured five journalists from around the globe. Sai Zaw Thaike was recognised for his determination to continue documenting human rights abuses in Myanmar despite constant threats to his life and liberty.

Since 2012, he has reported on the country’s repression, remaining underground after the 2021 coup to capture evidence of military violence. His arrest came in May 2023 while covering the devastation of a cyclone in Rakhine State. A military court sentenced him to two decades of hard labour, and he is now held in Yangon’s notorious Insein Prison, where RSF says he is being tortured.

Other laureates included Mozambique’s Carlitos Cadangue, who survived a murder attempt after investigating illegal mining; Argentina’s Julia Mengolini, founder of Futurock, recognised for her independence in the face of harassment; Gaza photographer Abdul Hakim Abu Riash, honoured for his series on war and hunger; and Guinean journalist Habib Marouane Camara, abducted in 2024 and still missing.

RSF President Pierre Haski, who chaired the jury, said the awards highlight the extraordinary resilience of journalists working under extreme pressure. The organisation described the winners as “symbols of resistance” in the fight for press freedom worldwide.

For Myanmar, Sai Zaw Thaike’s recognition underscores the peril faced by reporters who continue to expose the junta’s abuses. His case has become emblematic of the risks endured by those who refuse to be silenced.
