Kim Aris, the son of Myanmar’s detained democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, has unveiled a global fitness challenge to mark her 81st birthday later this month.

The initiative, called “81 for 81”, invites supporters worldwide to walk, run, cycle or move in solidarity, setting personal goals around the number 81. Suggested targets include running 81 kilometres, cycling 81 miles or taking 81,000 steps. Aris himself has pledged to skateboard 81 kilometres in a single day.

The campaign runs until 19 June, Suu Kyi’s birthday, and forms part of the broader “Global Proof of Life” movement. This effort demands verifiable evidence that the Nobel Peace Prize laureate, held incommunicado since the 2021 coup, is still alive.

A call for proof

Aris has not spoken to his mother since her arrest during the military takeover more than five years ago. In a video message, he dismissed regime claims that she has been moved between undisclosed locations. “This is not freedom,” he said, adding that the world still lacks independent confirmation of her condition.

His campaign follows repeated appeals since April, when Suu Kyi was excluded from a New Year amnesty that freed thousands of prisoners.

Suu Kyi’s continued detention

The former State Counsellor remains in custody, serving an 18‑year sentence after a series of convictions by closed military courts. Charges included corruption and violating state secrets. While the junta has suggested her detention conditions have changed, observers note she remains cut off from family, lawyers and the public.

Symbol of resistance

For supporters, the “81 for 81” challenge is more than a fitness drive. It is a symbolic act of solidarity with Myanmar’s most prominent democratic voice, whose fate remains shrouded in secrecy. By encouraging people to move together, Aris hopes to keep global attention on his mother’s plight and pressure the regime to provide proof of her wellbeing.
