Min Aung Hlaing faces backlash and Thai support after India trip

Myanmar’s military leader Min Aung Hlaing has returned from his first overseas visit as president, declaring his five‑day trip to India a “success” and demanding cooperation along the troubled frontier.

Speaking at Naypyidaw Airport on Wednesday, he urged “concerned parties” near the Myanmar–India border to work with his regime if they want the country to prosper. His remarks come as resistance forces control key trading hubs, including Paletwa and Rikhawdar, both vital to India’s stalled infrastructure projects.

During talks in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri discussed reviving two major schemes: the Kaladan Multi‑Modal Transit Transport Project and the India‑Myanmar‑Thailand Trilateral Highway. Both have been paralysed by Myanmar’s civil war since the 2021 coup.

The visit drew sharp criticism from rights groups and Myanmar’s opposition, who accused India of legitimising Min Aung Hlaing’s presidency after widely condemned elections in January. Planned protests in Delhi were swiftly suppressed by police.

His call for border cooperation underscores the regime’s weakened grip. The Arakan Army has openly offered to help India complete the Kaladan project, while Chin resistance forces hold other strategic crossings. Yet analysts warn India may seek to bolster the junta’s control, risking further clashes with resistance fighters.

The trip also coincided with Thailand’s push for renewed engagement with Myanmar. Deputy Prime Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow urged France to support dialogue, arguing ASEAN’s five‑point peace plan has stalled. Critics, however, caution that easing Myanmar’s isolation could entrench military rule without meaningful reforms.

Min Aung Hlaing’s India visit highlights the delicate balance facing regional powers: pursuing infrastructure and stability while confronting the reality of Myanmar’s fractured borders and contested legitimacy.

ThaiVisa, c'est aussi en français

ThaiVisa, it's also in French

Shouldn't invite him or accept him into the country - he's a dictator, never elected by the people - any country that accepts him as legitimate should hang their heads in shame, especially ASEAN members which this country is part of!
