Hun Sen Urges Peace in Thai-Cambodian Border Dispute

Phnom Penh – Acting Head of State Hun Sen has pledged that Cambodia will not resort to war in its ongoing border dispute with Thailand, warning that military action would only create “lifetime enemies” and prolong conflict for generations.

Speaking on 9 June in Banteay Meanchey province, where displaced families remain in temporary housing due to Thai military occupation, Hun Sen apologised for Cambodia’s lack of preparation during his time as prime minister. He admitted his “biggest mistake” was failing to strengthen defence capabilities, leaving the country short of equipment when clashes erupted along the frontier.

Despite this, Hun Sen insisted Cambodia will pursue only peaceful solutions. “Any bullet fired by Cambodia would be a diplomatic and political failure,” he said, stressing that the government continues to demand the return of occupied land but rejects force as a means of redrawing boundaries. He urged Cambodians abroad who call for military action to consider the human cost, asking: “Do you want war to return?”

Hun Sen highlighted the Dec. 27 ceasefire agreement, which calls for renewed joint border demarcation. While acknowledging delays on the Thai side due to elections and administrative changes, he said Cambodia expects commitments to be honoured. “If they don’t do it, let’s see whether the world will just stand and watch,” he remarked.

The Senate president also sought to reassure displaced residents, suggesting their settlement be named “Waiting Village” to reflect their determination to reclaim homes. He warned that even if Cambodia fought to retake land, there was no guarantee of holding it, and repeated cycles of violence could follow.

Hun Sen concluded by urging troops and local authorities to respect the ceasefire and avoid provocations. “Diplomatic failure is far more costly than military failure,” he said, adding that Cambodia and Thailand must not allow disputes to turn them into permanent enemies.
