US Official Says Iran Deal Could Hand Washington Enriched Uranium

US Official Says Iran Deal Could Hand Washington Enriched Uranium

A draft peace agreement between the United States and Iran could see Washington gain control of Tehran's stockpile of highly enriched uranium, according to a senior US official.

The official, speaking anonymously to reporters, said the emerging memorandum of understanding would require the material to be destroyed inside Iran before being removed from the country.

The comments come as negotiators appear to be edging closer to a deal aimed at ending months of conflict and reducing tensions across the Middle East.

Deal 'Very Close' To Completion

The US official said confidence in reaching an agreement had risen sharply in recent days.

"If I was at 75 percent this morning, I'm probably at 80 to 85 percent now," the official said.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who has played a mediation role, claimed a final agreed text had already been reached.

Meanwhile, reports emerged that the United Arab Emirates could unlock billions of dollars for Iran as part of a broader settlement, although Abu Dhabi has strongly denied the claims.

Trump Halts Strikes As Diplomacy Advances

The developments follow a dramatic decision by US President Donald Trump to cancel planned military strikes against Iran.

Trump said a draft agreement was ready and suggested it could be signed within days, possibly in Europe.

The White House has insisted any sanctions relief for Iran would only come after Tehran fulfils its obligations under the agreement.

That position was reinforced after Trump reportedly became angry over Iranian state media reports claiming Tehran would receive billions of dollars immediately upon signing.

Iran Signals Optimism But Disputes Remain

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said a deal could potentially be signed remotely within days.

He claimed the agreement would guarantee Iranian-Omani oversight of the Strait of Hormuz and insisted Iran's enriched uranium could only be diluted inside the country.

Despite the optimistic language, significant questions remain over exactly what Tehran will be required to surrender and when.

Israel Reportedly Caught Off Guard

The agreement has also created tensions with Israel.

Reports suggest Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was surprised when Trump announced the breakthrough.

According to a senior US official, Trump later told Netanyahu:

"This is the deal. It's an excellent deal. It's time to end this war."

The same official suggested Israel may have little room to block the agreement if Washington and Tehran reach a final understanding.

Five Key Goals Of The Agreement

According to the US briefing, the proposed deal is designed to achieve several major objectives:

  • Reopen the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping.

  • Extend the current ceasefire.

  • Begin the dismantling of Iran's nuclear programme.

  • Remove or destroy Iran's stockpile of highly enriched uranium.

  • Open broader regional discussions involving Lebanon and Iranian-backed groups.

Still Not A Done Deal

Despite the growing optimism, US officials stress that no agreement has yet been signed.

After months of missile exchanges, air strikes, naval incidents and threats of wider war, negotiators appear closer than ever to a settlement.

But with disagreements still lingering over uranium, sanctions and regional security guarantees, officials admit the deal remains tantalisingly close — yet not quite over the finish line.

That's never going to happen. There is major distance between the US media's narratives and the Iranian narratives of the memorandum of understanding. Iran has flat out said that handing over the enriched nuclear material to the US is a no-go proposition. If you really want to know what the Iranian positions are, read Iranian media like PressTV.

A memorandum of understanding (MOU) is not "a deal." It is the process to identify the topics which will be discussed during negotiations which haven't ever started yet. From my understanding, the two sides aren't even talking face-to-face. They are exchanging notes through a Pakistani mediator. So when Trump and the US media tout that "the US and Iran have a deal," what they have are a list of talking points to be discussed during future negotiations.

Iran has been given the reason why they should not agree to such a proposal.

When Trump says he has a deal with Iran he’s lying.

Have you not grasped that yet?

Here's an example of the problem. One side is stating that "a deal" is close to being finalized.
"Sharif also reaffirmed that “peace has never been this close as it is now.”

The Pakistani prime minister’s statement came shortly after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in a post on X that a deal “had never been closer.”

The other side, in this case Iranian FM Araghchi has stated that it's not "a deal" but a Memorandum of Understanding (See Araghchi statement on X below).

What's your point? I have no idea what your talking about. I was very clear about my own understanding of this situation given media announcement from both Western media and Iranian media.

Trump can do what he normally does when he wants something. Steal it.

You have to learn how to do the spin. Trump won't steal anything; he will relieve them of their burden.

If Trump ends up paying money to Iran, Congress should impeach, convict and haul his fat ass out of the White House. Then the criminal and civil courts should have a go. Again.

There is no deal. There is no MOU(memorandum of understanding). Some Trump sycophant running his mouth again.

Exactly. There is nothing other that individuals in Iran saying, "Maybe we're close to an MOU," and Trump saying his typical, "I WON. I've beat Iran 40 times and I deserve a Nobel. We'll sign the peace agreement this weekend. Iran really wants a deal and they're surrendering unconditionally in the war me and Netanyahu started. And Cuba's next, then Greenland and Canada!" In the time being he still moves the stock markets and makes a billion here, a billion there.
