Putin warned Russia faces ‘social explosion’ as war pressure mounts

A veteran Russian opposition lawmaker has issued one of the starkest public warnings yet to the Kremlin, claiming the country is edging towards a “social explosion” unless President Vladimir Putin finds a way to end the war in Ukraine.

The intervention comes at a sensitive moment for Moscow, with continued battlefield losses, growing economic strains and Ukrainian strikes reaching deeper into Russian-controlled territory.

Rare Dissent Breaks Through

Vyacheslav Markhayev, a Communist Party MP and former police general, accused Russia’s leadership of losing touch with ordinary citizens after more than two decades in power.

“The time for illusions has passed,” he warned, arguing that the country risks sliding into “total chaos” unless the authorities change course. He called for a clear and public strategy to bring the conflict to an end in line with Russia’s national interests.

In Russia’s tightly controlled political environment, such criticism from a serving parliamentarian remains unusual.

War’s Human Cost Comes Into Focus

Markhayev reserved particular criticism for the continued loss of young Russians on the battlefield.

His comments coincided with reports of the death of 18-year-old soldier Alisher Svirin, believed to be the first Russian serviceman born in 2008 to die in the conflict. For critics of the war, the case has become a symbol of how a conflict that began years ago is now consuming an entirely new generation.

The longer the fighting continues, the greater the strain on families, communities and military recruitment.

Economic Frustrations Boil Over

The MP also launched a broad attack on inequality, corruption and declining living standards.

He claimed pensioners are struggling under rising costs while Russia’s wealthiest individuals continue to accumulate vast fortunes. According to Markhayev, corruption scandals, asset seizures and elite enrichment have become defining features of the political system.

His argument was simple: ordinary Russians are carrying the burden while powerful insiders prosper.

Pressure Builds on Multiple Fronts

The warning comes as Ukraine intensifies long-range drone attacks on infrastructure, ports and energy facilities across Russian-controlled territory.

At the same time, questions are growing over Moscow’s ability to sustain a costly war while managing domestic economic pressures. Whether Markhayev’s criticism reflects broader unease within Russia’s political establishment remains unclear.

What is clear is that the war’s consequences are no longer confined to the battlefield. They are increasingly shaping the political and social pressures building inside Russia itself.
