Europe braces as Trump signals fresh push on Ukraine peace deal

Featured Replies

European leaders are growing increasingly nervous that Donald Trump could seize control of Ukraine peace negotiations now that tensions with Iran have eased, potentially reshaping the diplomatic landscape and undermining months of coordinated Western strategy.

Behind closed doors, officials fear a renewed White House focus on Ukraine could bring rapid movement toward talks on terms that Kyiv and its European allies may find difficult to accept.

Trump Turns Back to Ukraine

Speaking after the apparent winding down of the Iran crisis, Trump made clear that Ukraine is once again moving to the top of his foreign policy agenda.

The US president said he had recently spoken with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and suggested both sides remain open to negotiations. He also highlighted the human cost of the conflict, describing the scale of battlefield deaths as unacceptable.

For European capitals, however, the concern is not whether talks happen, but who controls them.

Fears of a Diplomatic End Run

EU officials reportedly worry that Trump could bypass established channels and attempt to broker an agreement directly with Moscow and Kyiv.

Such a move could sideline European governments that have spent years coordinating sanctions, military aid and diplomatic pressure on Russia. There is also concern that Washington could support compromises that Brussels and Kyiv reject, particularly on territorial issues.

The prospect of a US-led negotiation has exposed growing anxiety about Europe's influence over the eventual shape of any settlement.

Brussels Moves to Lock In Support

As uncertainty grows, the European Union is accelerating its own commitments.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has emphasised that the bloc is already providing the majority of Ukraine’s financial support, while additional funding packages and defence loans continue to be rolled out.

At the same time, EU ministers have formally advanced membership negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, signalling a long-term political commitment that extends beyond the battlefield.

Who Gets a Seat at the Table?

The emerging dispute is increasingly about leverage. French President Emmanuel Macron has insisted Europe must participate in any negotiations as a full partner rather than a bystander.

Kyiv shares that position. Ukrainian officials want the United States aligned with a common Western approach while maintaining opposition to territorial concessions.

With Trump signalling a new diplomatic push and Europe determined to protect its influence, the battle over Ukraine’s future may soon extend beyond the front lines and into the negotiating room itself.
