NEW YORK, 20 June 2026 — The UN’s special envoy on Myanmar has warned that the country’s political and humanitarian crisis is deepening, with escalating violence, mass displacement and rising hunger creating mounting regional repercussions.

Julie Bishop told an informal General Assembly meeting that conditions have steadily deteriorated since the military seized power in 2021. “Today, I will report on the highly polarised and increasingly bleak situation across Myanmar. The plight of the Rohingya remains dire,” she said.

Bishop described Myanmar as a “global epicentre” for cybercrime, a major source of methamphetamine and opium, and the world’s leading cause of landmine casualties. She noted that more than 3.7 million people are internally displaced, with a further 1.6 million scattered across the region. Bangladesh alone hosts 1.2 million Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar, now the world’s largest refugee camp.

The envoy stressed that Myanmar is among the six most severe hunger hotspots globally, urging governments to act to prevent further deterioration. She reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to “stay and deliver” despite immense challenges facing aid operations.

“The international community must remain steadfast in solidarity with the people of Myanmar and be guided by their appeals for help,” Bishop said, calling for renewed efforts to halt attacks on civilians and restore inclusive dialogue.

Her warning comes as the junta continues to tighten its grip, detaining civilian leaders and fuelling conflict that has left the country in turmoil for more than five years.

And the world will do nothing.

UN has far to long abused it's prestige and has become a stronghold for the biggest egos of all the political cronies of the world, who get prestigious nominations at the NYC UN Office. But their time has come and nobody wants to listen to the New York UN gang. Remains the UN HQ of Switzerland where it could be a bit more decent, provide their really clean up that UN office that has far to many useless bureaucrats diplomats from all over the world.

The people of Myanmar need to pool their money and hire the PR firm that the people of Gaza use.

Sounds like a plan. Except the only people now with money in Myanmar are the Tatmadaw and their affiliates.
