Trump accused of turning NATO into ‘buy American’ sales pitch

Donald Trump is facing fresh criticism after a report claimed his approach to NATO is increasingly focused on securing business for American firms, with European diplomats warning the military alliance is becoming more transactional than strategic.

The claims come as NATO allies ramp up defence spending under pressure from Washington, raising concerns that military commitments are becoming intertwined with commercial interests and political leverage.

Europe Warns Against One-Way Partnership

According to Politico, European officials fear the alliance is shifting away from its traditional mission of collective security and democratic defence. One diplomat said Europe remains reliant on the United States but warned Washington should not assume allies will simply fall into line.

The concerns centre on what diplomats see as a growing emphasis on economic deals, defence contracts and trade disputes rather than long-term security cooperation.

Defence Spending Meets ‘Buy American’ Pressure

The Trump administration has welcomed Europe's surge in defence investment but has also pushed back against efforts to prioritise European manufacturers.

US ambassador to NATO Matt Whitaker said Washington supported increased defence production but opposed what it viewed as protectionist policies. His comments came as NATO members face continued pressure to boost military spending to 5% of GDP or risk reduced US support.

Politico reported that around half of roughly $120 billion in new defence spending has flowed to American arms manufacturers, reinforcing concerns that commercial interests are shaping alliance policy.

Summit Strategy Built Around Business

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has sought to frame recent summits around industrial cooperation, highlighting hundreds of billions of dollars in European orders supporting American defence jobs.

The UK and Germany have also announced plans to manufacture US-designed weapons under licence, a move diplomats hope will demonstrate goodwill towards Washington while strengthening European military capabilities.

Questions Grow Over Trump's Interests

The report lands amid renewed scrutiny of Mr Trump's personal finances and potential conflicts of interest. Critics argue his extensive business holdings make it increasingly difficult to separate US foreign policy from private commercial gain.

The White House has consistently rejected accusations that the President's decisions are influenced by personal financial interests. Nevertheless, critics say the growing overlap between defence policy, trade negotiations and commercial deals will remain a source of political controversy as NATO navigates an increasingly uncertain security landscape.

This partnership is clearly one-sided, with the United States carrying the burden of load.
