However, it should be pointed out the the last 10 minutes or so of the film, the escape, are entirely fictitious. The prison on which Billy was imprisoned was on an island, and he made good his escape in a rowing boat. I expect this is why the turkish were upset by the film.

There's a very good true-life documentary about it on Youtube, it includes interviews with Billy Hayes.

Very well said - the unhinged levels of schadenfreude many present highlights a degree of bitterness and mental illness that many of us should feel uncomfortable with knowing these disturbed characters walk and drive among us.

I assumed the turks were upset about a foreign prisoner killing a guard and escaping from prison, I had no idea they might be "touchy" about a rowing boat, anyway , now you have ruined it for everybody well done

Yes. Of course he would be expected to come up with a plausible story. No point to implausible. Normally car insurance would cover damage, but maybe he didn’t have any.

There’s no way to tell really and I don’t think it’s going to make any difference to his court case.

There are also council estates in the UK brimming with half witted chavs who would welcome a free holiday and some pocket money, many of which would consider serving a bit of time in a UK prison as no big deal, bet they never expected a turkish prison,

So much pap in this post. The article states that the mule was housed with other Brits. Watch 'Midnight Express' to see why. Infer what you will about the fact that there are other Brits in the same prison. My inferences are in my post.

The other point I'll address is that Brits are not a race: it's a nationality, ergo my pattern recognition of British behaviour abroad is not 'racism'.
